I know I've been largely MIA as a po(r)ster for a long time, taking care of family stuff, but I'd like to poke my head in briefly and offer my $.02 on the future of the HC situation:
1. No retreads. No alums. No old people. For me this means no Butch, no Mario, no Schiano, no Diaz, really not even Babers for me. I don't want anyone over 55 running this program right now and I don't want anyone who's played here or has family here running it. Basically if you can get a discount at Golden Corral, I don't want you here as a head coach. Just a personal opinion based on over a decade of bad karma...
2. Identity. This has been my mantra since Coker was let go. We need an identity on both sides of the ball but especially on offense. I would prefer a progressive, offensive-minded HC but whoever we get I want to be able to tell from game 1 next year what it is we are. No more "pro-style with spread elements and a touch of smashmouth-air raid but with a FB on 3rd and 1..." let's get a guy who knows what he is, knows what he wants to do and knows who he wants to recruit in order to do it.
3. No more NFL-U. This illusion of "kids want to play in a system that prepares them for the league" is just that - an illusion. At this point, I don't really care if zero of our guys get drafted as long as they win a ****-ton of games AT MIAMI. With the NFL moving steadily toward more wide-open and innovative offenses anyway, it should go without saying, but this idea that we have to line up in whatever formation and simply "out-execute" everybody is insanity in this day and age.
4. Surround yourself with the best available people (spend the money.) I don't want to see HS coaches on our staff unless they're "support". I don't want anybody's relatives on our staff. I don't want this to be anybody's first D-I job. I know that may seem to contradict #1 a bit but we can get a talented young coach with a pedigree and connections without trotting out Don Soldinger or prying Jimmy off of the cabana.
We can win again if we give kids reason to come here and fans reason to stay in their seats. It takes a little bit of forward thinking but it can be done.
