All the talk since our game has placed blame on Dawson and Mario and caveman football. Too predictable running every first down, conservative etc…

But let’s review the actual tape.

Drive 1: Drive started off passing. Play 2 was an unsportsmanlike penalty from Cici which killed the drive. Play 3 another pass and then punt

Drive 2: 1st down deep shot for 30 yards. Next 1st down, another deep shot for 39 and now we’re in a goal line situation where pound it in. But so far the only 1st down we’ve ran on was a 1st n goal.

Drive 3: Start backed inside our own 10. We run the ball for 6 on 1st down, but again another drive killed by an unsportsmanlike penalty. Try another run for minimal gain. Then on 2nd down Beck hits a pass for a 1st down at our 18. We pass again on 1st except this time Beck throws it to the Louisville. So this drive where we started inside our own 10 we did come out running, and would’ve been successful if it wasn’t for a dumb penalty. And then Beck giving it away.

Drive 4: Again starting inside our own 10. Again a drive where we started 1st down another penalty from Bell on a false start making it 1st n long. 1st down it’s a 14 yard pass from Beck followed by a 12 yard 2nd down run. We then run on first down for 0. Then again Beck threw the ball to the wrong team

Drive 5: Passed on 1st down. Then another penalty set us back. Passed again on 2nd for 61. Another first and goal. We run on 1st for nothing followed by 2 failed pass attempts.

But overall on our 10 first downs, we passed 60% of the time. And of the 4 times we ran it on 1st, 2 were first n goal inside their 10. And one was first down inside ours.

We only scored 10 points the 1st half. Because 2 of our 5 drives Beck made bad throws and because penalties kept killing our drives.

The 2nd half was even more lopsided in terms of throwing on 1st down.

Now I do have some questions about some our sets. Lville knew we wanted to throw screens out of those trip sets . And I do have some questions about what value our TEs are bringing. Lofton and Bauman play a lot of snaps, they had 2 catches for 18 yards. And unlike guys like Cam they don’t seem to particularly effective blockers.

Maybe time for more 4 man sets with Moore or Tony Johnson. But we’ve also seen multiple times Lofton or someone open on a check down and Beck not looking for it. Which is ultimately the issue. If we can’t stop the dumb penalties and Beck can’t make it through his progressions before forcing passes to CJ or Toney, we’re screwed.

Even gino toretta was taking shots at mario and the stupid run dives today on sports talk. I’ll be honest i didnt read anything you wrote cuz i dnt want to distract from the insane thoughts, that we cant bleeping adjust our bleeping run game.

Good breakdown, thanks.
On another note I’m so over the ticky-tack bull**** we get flagged for. Toney’s and CiCi’s flags could have easily been a quick “hey, no more of that” and then the blatant PI on Becks first int was like the official was too caught up in the pick to pay attention.

here's a way to resolve relying on a flag to save a possession - dont throw it into quad coverage.

were undisciplined. it has nothing to do with the refs. we are what we are. we also got saved by a fake roughing the passer taking a pick away too.

I agree penalties are killing the ability to run, but YTD Miami is in the A gap far more than more successful running offenses. In fact, the thing IU, Ark, Ore and TT have in common is that the majority of the yards from their running games is coming from outside so they choose to run there. While Miami is getting 59% of its yards in between the tackles, I can't help but wonder if it would be less if they ran outside. It would also explain the lack of explosiveness in the Offense.

The play after CiCi’s penalty one of their DBs punched Daniels in the face after the whistle with the official 3 feet away looking right at it. Looked like the official just looked and then turned away.

Is this attempts or yards? “Choice %” suggests the former but your post says the latter.

Minus some dumb untimely self inflicted pre-snap penalties and some post play unsportsmanlike penalties, if we excute correctly, the plays are fine.

If the above happens, that meant we are running the ball more effectively and running the clock out better.

It also means we are gaining first downs on second down (staying out of 3rd and long)

It also means the passing game is playing more efficiently.

Sure- some more stretch and outside runs and pulls would be great (better play calling), but better execution would also be a great thing to see.

Lets face it Dawson is who he is. Alot of the things Houston fans were complaining about with Dawson are the samethings were complaining about now. The runs up the middle, the lack of creativity and the offense getting conservative in the second half are all things Houston fans warned us about.

The idea that it wasn't roughing the passer is wild to me. Ball was gone and the guy kept taking him to the ground. Despite what the commentators said it was a no brainer.

Respectfully I would say just looking at whether something was a pass or a run while ignoring sets, pace and scheme to determine whether an offensive is conservative or not is a bit simplistic. A lot of offenses that we consider aggressive actually run more than they pass.

For instance OSU has only passed it more than run one season since 2020. In Brohms 3 years at Louisville he’s only passed more than run in one season (this one), one season ran more and the other season exactly evenly distributed.

Lane is a divisive figure on this board and all kinds of accusations have been leveled at him. However, no matter how much some of our fans may hate him the one thing NO ONE has ever accused him of is running a conservative offense. Yet in his 5 years at Ole Miss he runs it around 57-58% of the time and the lowest he ever ran it was 53% of the time, with one year at 61% of the time.

This is not to advocate for Lane but to illustrate the point of the importance of looking at the offense as a whole before determining whether it’s conservative or not.

The fact that we rarely generate explosive plays combined with penalties just kills the offense. We have 5 rushes over 20 yards and 2 over 30....none farther

Miami Rushing Explosiveness: 122
Miami Passing Explosiveness: 102

And just for comparison sake....
Stanford Rushing Explosiveness: 121
Stanford Passing Explosiveness: 55

I would agree except om that first Card drive, their right tackle was getting off early (actually the whole game). It's totally amazing to me that teams coming in, are averaging multiple penalties, then they play us, and its zero penalties, then next game their right back to multiple penalties

I point this out after every game. Good luck. This board decided that Mario is a caveman who only wants to run the ball, and they're going to stick with that narrative even when we lose because of four interceptions.

A flaw in the original post is that it focuses on whether we ran or passed. I dont think anybody has any issues about being a run oriented offense. We can run 70% of the time and I wouldnt care.....if it was effective.

But the last two games we are averaging under 3 yards a carry. It has not been effective and that is the problem. The run game is not effective because of tight formations constantly, predictability, and lack of space.

There is not a single play in all of football that is effective when the other team knows what you are going to do. Thats why sign stealing has gotten so much attention lately.

Well, we dont need our signs stolen. We are just stubbornly predictable and that makes it so much harder to be effective...even with a talent advantage.

That is the main issue everyone has. Not whether we run it a lot more than pass it. With this oline and qb, we SHOULD be running it more than passing. But dammit, it doesnt need to be the same run play everytime.
