The fact that Wilbon is a cultural poseur leads him discredit actual athletes whose reality is what Wilbon wishes he could refer to as being his past. This is evident now and in the case of his sick diatribes against the deceased Sean Taylor.
In other words, to paraphase the opening of the movie Patton, Wilbon took the safe route of "shoveling **** in Lousianna" while other men had a perilous journey which led some to victory and adulation Wilbon will never see. The jealousy seethes out of him whenever UM's athletes do well, as they are the epitome of the real deal and he is the epitome of fraud.
