Shannon left Golden a weaker roster than he inherited, although you can say that Randy was hamstring badly by atheists recruiting failures at WR under Coker.
Talent took a further dip under
for the record there were canes fans saying richt when going 7-6 was worse then golden. this list of scholly and blue chip numbers prove otherwise
Right. Here's what I see.
Larry Coker left Randy Shannon a relatively talented team, but one that was horribly understaffed at wide receiver (to the point that in 2006 we had to convert a punter and cornerback just to be able to field a credible WR unit when injuries and suspensions were factored in).
Randy Shannon left the Hurricanes in a much more perilous position. The bulk of the team's best talent were third and fourth year players thanks to a somewhat weak 2010 class and a completely wrecked 2011 class. Al Golden would have needed to recruit at Urban Meyer levels for the 2012 Class to bring the numbers back up to Canes norms...but then the Shapiro scandal broke. Suddenly Golden was recruiting in the midst of somewhat credible threats that Miami would receive the death penalty. He still did fine, but did not get the 14-16 blue chip players that he needed to surge the numbers back up.
As for
Al Golden, by the time that the NCAA investigation was over the "hope" portion of his coaching period was over. Now he was going to be judged by results, and by 2014 we saw a Hurricanes squad that had earned a record of 22-16 the previous three years. It wasn't enough to entice that surge of blue chip players. He did gradually bring the numbers back up, so that by 2015 he was back to the blue chip level where he started at. The team itself was balanced, but not deep due to roster attrition and NCAA sanctions.
Mark Richt improved recruiting and leaves Manny Diaz the most talented team on paper in at least a decade.
