Here's a chart to illustrate Miami's estimated scholarship numbers since 2006. Star rankings for each roster (per Rivals) are on the bottom.

A few notes:
- I may have a few of the DL and DE mixed up in my tallies
- 2009 technically had 2 QBs, but I had AJ Highsmith listed under his original (and later) DB position
- By my tally, and not including any scholarships that have been given to walk-ons, Miami has eight slots left to give out this year

Other interesting note that this is the first time since 2009 that the roster had more 4/5 star players on it than 3 stars or below.

d line and d end? Do you mean D tackle and D ends? D ends are D lineman as our D tackles.

This thread should be pinned due to the amount of histrionics (once verified). I love data like this. Noticing how bad we have been and for how long, and then the why which is not evident in the data, but we all know it having lived through it.
The why makes this information so interesting.

I didn’t include it here, but another interesting stat is how much attrition took place at certain points amongst players who were only one or two years in. It helps to explain why we had such depth problems at times.

Another factor not as prevalent recently - and not included in the numbers - were the number of kids who committed but did not ultimately qualify.

Having less than 80 guys on the roster is considered self probation in my eyes.

10/14 years we had scholarship reductions...
Another factor not considered...how many players did we redshirt on a given year. In some years..particularly a few of the Golden tenure we redshirted very little. That means players are on the field before they are ready physically, and when they do develop they cycle through the program more quickly. I’m trying to remember, but I think it was 2014 where Golden actually redshirted a normal number of players for the first time.

I think these numbers are a underestimated reason why Miami tailed off in the 2009 and 2013 campaigns. Injuries rapidly attracted the 2009 squad after a 5-1 star and we did not have the depth to handle it. Likewise in 2013, we came out of the FSU game in a mauled state and again had insufficient depth.

it goes to s how the kind of work richt and now diaz had to do to fix the talent deficits this team had. people forget that when saying should beat Virginia's dukes of the world every year. this team isn't the early Miami teams our player base lacked depth and blue chip talent. richt was fixing it and diaz will continue to fix it but it was a legit issue also miamji in 3 yrs didn't know who they were lacked identity bc/virginia/duke for all there faults knew there identity

Blue,Mohammah ,Grace are some of the names I recall as players we lost before they completed their eligibility--I'm sure I am missing many more.

**** wtf was golden doing

Scrambling. When he was hired in 2010, the 2011 Class was down to just two players. Two. He managed to somehow piece together a class for Feb 2011, but ended up with only two four star players (Chikillo and Grimble).

Then in August 2011, any momentum and hope that he was hoping to capitalize on was quashed by the Nevin Shapiro scandal. Golden still pulled in a decent class in Feb 2012 (it featured roughly 8 four star players), but it was not as good as it could have been.

The reason our talent dropped off so badly at the start of this decade was this:
2010 Recruiting Class: A third of the class failed to qualify or left the team within 12 months
2011 Recruiting Class: Only two four star players due to decimation during the 2010 season and coaching turnover

Golden would have needed to have had 2018-type classes in 2011 and 2012 just to keep numbers on par.

his 2012 class was very good though

This, IMO is the most important factor. There's always going to be highly ranked busts but when you can fill the void with another highly ranked guy, it doesn't matter. Getting (5) 4 star players is better than getting (2) 5 stars and (3) 3 stars. It's all about volume.
