*** Top 100 Miami quarterback commit Israel Abrams put up monster numbers as he completed 24-of-30 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns. He also added two touchdowns on the ground in Lombard (Ill.) Montini Catholic’s 39-38 loss to Chicago (Ill.) St. Rita. Going into this season, Abrams was undefeated as a starter. However, Montini Catholic has been up and down this year, dropping two games at about the halfway point. I’ll get to Abrams as a player in a second. What really stood out to me this weekend was simply his will to win. Abrams did everything humanly possible to lead his team to victory, and yet, everything around him collapsed. Montini’s special teams allowed two onside kick recoveries, the defense couldn’t make second half stops to save their lives and gave up what would be a 90-yard game-winning drive and two-point conversion, and the coaching staff was way to conservative after taking a double digit lead earlier in the game. It was a nightmare to watch. On the flip side of the coin, Abrams is the best high school quarterback I’ve evaluated in-game since Oregon’s Dante Moore.

*** Despite all the chaos going on around him, Abrams remained locked in. He rallied teammates on the sidelines, he pleaded to his coaching staff to be more aggressive, he used his legs to make plays and just showed so much charisma and leadership. I’ve always said Abrams checks all the boxes from an intangibles standpoint, and that couldn’t have been more true on Friday night. He also plays with a ton of swagger and truly loves football. Winning also means everything to him, and it’s obviously something he was unfamiliar with up until this season. Abrams is highly touted and committed to Miami. He could have easily just stopped caring after the first loss. Instead, it was easy to see the hurt in Abrams’ eyes after this game. I didn’t even bother to do an interview with him, but he did make sure to find me and thank me for coming out, which I thought said a lot about his character.

*** Abrams started off the game going a perfect 14-of-14 in a very Darian Mensah-like performance. Ranked as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 41 overall recruit nationally, Abrams delivered accurate passes at all levels of the field. On the game’s opening drive, Abrams had a beautiful 60-yard touchdown, which showcased his deep ball accuracy and touch — something I praised him for quite a bit after watching him throw at OT7 in the spring and at Miami this summer. Abrams had a few more touch passes on deep corners and back shoulder throws. The arm talent is easy to see when Abrams makes intermediate throws in the middle of the field and to the opposite hash. The ball really pops out of his hand, and his release is elite. I love the velocity and different arm angles he throws with as well. Another big takeaway was lower body mechanics. Abrams uses his lower half to drive and unlock more power — something than a lot of young quarterbacks don’t get accustomed to doing until the next level.

*** What really makes Abrams a five-star prospect in my eyes is his ability to make accurate off-platform throws as well as his ability to navigate in and around the pocket. Abrams is effective as a runner as well, but he’s very much a pass first quarterback. Abrams always keeps his eyes downfield, has a knack for feeling and evading pressure and his arm strength allows him to make any throw on the field, even when on the move. Abrams is the modern day college football quarterback and a great fit for Miami’s offense. He can do a lot of what Mensah is doing under Shannon Dawson this season. Miami looked at a handful of other elite quarterbacks before prioritizing Abrams, who was my favorite quarterback on the board this offseason. And it’s really not hard to see why. The biggest thing for Abrams will be physical development. He does need to add weight to his tall, lanky frame (listed at 6-4, 190). Once he does, Abrams will be ready to start early in his career at The U.
