Man, this brought a tear to my eye. Even though it was Mario's time to shine, he called out to Jimmy to give him his credit. And after the game Mario said, At the end of the day, he changed our lives, my brother and I. We were still kind of a nobody. We pride ourselves on that. He offered my brother and I scholarships. My parents, may they rest in peace, they didn't even know what a scholarship was.

After the game, my wife asked me why is it that you rarely see guys that played at Alabama, Georgia, etc on the sidelines. She's a fellow alum, but not a big sports person. I explained to her that it's different at Miami because a lot of our former letterwinners believed that being a 'Cane saved them, it gave them a way out, especially the guys that were recruited under Jimmy. It's different than a school like Bama, where the student-athletes(especially the Black ones), view it as a temporary arrangement, a stop on the way to the NFL or to whatever is next.

Mario Cristobal loves the University of Miami, because he knows that's where he for the first time in his life saw what life could be, and that there was something out there for him and his family. I identify with that, because it was at the University of Miami I saw the world, and I wouldn't be the man I am today without my time in Coral Gables.
