I personally think it is a HR hire as he has had a ton of success and even won a NC.

Former offensive line coach at Texas, Georgia and LSU, and an All-America offensive lineman as a player at Auburn. Hired by Saban, Richt, Mack Brown, Beamer, and Richt again.

At Georgia. During his time there, the Bulldogs ranked in the top 25 in the nation in fewest sacks allowed three times, including ranking sixth and leading the SEC in 2009 with just 12.

At LSU. Searels made a habit of producing All-America linemen for LSU. He coached two first-team All-Americans in Stephen Peterman and Rimington Award winner Ben Wilkerson and a second-team All-America selection in Andrew Whitworth. Five of his Tigers’ linemen earned spots on NFL rosters.

At Texas, In 2013, his final season in Austin, Searels’ line enabled the Longhorns to finish 36th in the country in rushing offense and 17th in sacks allowed per game. Trey Hopkins was named first-team All-Big 12 while Donald Hawkins secured a spot on the second team. In 2012, the offensive line, which was without a senior starter, allowed the opposition to post just 4.1 tackles for loss per game, which ranked tied for third in the country.

Can someone with more football savvy tell me whether I should be excited or not?

I'm not football savvy but the dude is highly touted by 4 of the best coaches in the last twenty years and has consistently been top tier in fewest sacks allowed and rushing offense (outside this first year with VT)

I say reason enough to be excited. Better than Scott staying on as OL coach with little experience or bringing maribal from Marshall. Better than any other option we had heard

I say yes. He is highly regarded as one of the best college OL coaches in the football community and you can see that by the people that have hired him which was mentioned above.

You can look at stats if you want but there is always underlying factors that play into it. He may not be the best of the best but he's a quality coach and he's not going to be a liability like Kehoe was at the back end of his career.

Searels is also known as a pretty good recruiter.
