But Butch knew what a great player looked like and was the one of best evaluators we've ever had.

We were on probation - almost got a death penalty - and our recruiting hit rock bottom. Game Day coaching was like a Chinese Fire Drill with one-armed Chinese. Not much to work with.

Butch left early on Thursdays to evaluate talent and recruit - for JIMMY.

Then for himself as HC - and put together the best college team of all time.

Too many old timer's only memories were of Butch's first couple of years - before he started getting some of his own players going.

Hail. Clappy won a National Championship with the team Butch put together, and Clappy was certainly not a NC level coach.

I saw every game he ever coached for UM. I was a West Endzone season ticket holder since 1981. They used to boo Butch when he ran into the tunnel at half. I can still see him pushing those bangs away from his forehead. So frustrating!!! But Butch made up for it with his keen ability to recruit absolute studs.
