Louisville defense has been weak against running QBs

Georgia Tech - 58 yards

Notre Dame - 52 Yards

SMU - 113 yards

Virginia- 84 Yards

Louisville defense has been prone to allowing QBs run on them this year. I think Cam Ward can definitely continue that trend of hurting them on the ground. If the pass isn’t there, just take off on them or some designed QB runs

In college sacks are counted as negative rushes so the numbers could have been even more.

Cam isn't a running QB, though. He's a capable runner, but seems to be at his best when a play breaks down. He only gained 128 yards rushing this season. TBH, I'm not sure I want him toting the pill as part of our game plan. The less contact he takes, the better, because we should be able to pic Louisville apart offensively.

My main concern is Brohm ****ing Guidry down and giving our defense fits.

Agree. Our dominance in this game will not be determined by our offence.

The other side of the ball is a big issue. There isn’t any aspect of our defence that is remotely better than above average in the last 2 weeks. Even our defensive line, which was supposed to be good, overall, and the edges elite, has been only ‘pretty good’. Linebackers have struggled to make tackles and the secondaries issues have been stated repeatedly.

4-5 stops a game is probably enough to win, but that is a lot to ask at the moment

I'm banking on the rest week providing our DL with the time needed to recover and recharge for this week's showdown in Louisville. If they play to their potential, it'll take some pressure off our LBs and DBs.

I fully expect Brohm to scheme up a solid game plan; solid defensive line play is imperative, as that is our strength on the defensive side of the ball.

The L'ville qb is almost as old as old man Cam, both are collecting AARP benefits. hit him and hit him often...and hit him again.

"He's very poised," Brohm said. "He understands football. He's got a great feel standing there making last-minute throws.

"I think he throws the best when he's on the move, when he can buy time.

"That's when big plays are created because he's just so natural doing this. We've got to contain him in the pocket. We've got to make him throw from the pocket as hard and as well as we can."

One of the guys who will be tasked with keeping Ward in the pocket while cranking up the Cards pass rush is defensive end Ashton Gillotte.

"Just containing him in the pocket and finding ways to disrupt them," Gillotte said. "So whether that's tipped balls or pressures, getting him off his spot and make him have to work for those plays.

"Obviously, again, he's a great athlete. Getting him out of his comfort zone is going to be crucial. You can't let guys get in a rhythm."
 
Football is not a complicated sport when u play w/in the sport.

The key to us beating UL is playing sound, fundamental football. As much as I love Cam, my PM folks know I’ve been weary of his penchant to look for the big play vs. taking what the defense gives to him. He, Shadeur, & Caleb Williams r 3 guys w/ incredible moxy, poise, & trust in their arm talent that often leads to them holding on to the ball too long, taking unnecessary sacks and/or putting passes in harms way.

I’ve told folks privately that eventually that type of QB play will catch up to us, & by the hairs of our chin we’re still undefeated. UL is not some sort of world beater, but they r better than Cal & VT. Our Def can’t fall for the eye candy, taking unnecessary angles or leaving guys free, & the O can’t give up unnecessary possessions. Play solid football, take what the defense gives u, a bend don’t break mentality on defense, & we’ll win.

If we play remotely like we did against both VT & Cal, digging ourselves a hole, this time we’ll lose b/c unlike those other two coaches who coached not to lose, leaving the door open, Brohm will continue to coach to win.

People are acting soft shouldred about cam running… we aren’t asking him to be a battering ram like Josh Allen

Just enough to keep the defense honest when they fail to account for him and pick up the easy 5-10 yards. Cam is smart he’s been great about finding the sideline and getting down before contact

We had 6 stops vs Cal (7 if you count the one play ending the 1st half) and they scored on 5 of their possessions plus the pick 6.
I think the Cal game was a huge outlier. They scored on big plays that they would not be able to duplicate if we played again. I'm hoping for better vs. Louisville.

Agreed. Cam will have to run to win against the better teams. Our WR room is good but some plays they just don't get open or the Oline breaks down and Cam has no choice but to take off.

Maybe I have my orange and green glass on but I think the VT and Cal games were close due to correctable mistakes.

VT we had the 3 turnovers coupled with about 110 yds in returns.

Cal was like 4 big plays that hopefully were looked at 1000 times during the bye and are limited going forward.
