'Pete's over' -- How USC's hopes of recapturing glory failed the Trojans

This is an article that details the fall of the trojan empire and how their insistence on clinging to the past would eventually doom them.

This is not to say that Butch Davis shouldn't/couldn't coach at UM, but people really need to let go of 2000 and 2001. It was a REALLY...REALLY...REALLY long time ago. Life itself is about progression and evolution. Jay-Z doesn't make reasonable doubt for his whole life. He eventually graduates from that and makes The Blueprint. He eventually graduates from that and makes American Gangster. All great people and great things have an identity unto themselves and progression is central to accomplishing great feats.

****, 95% of you were old enough to see Howard and Jimmy's Canes and could see in '95, that the Butch Canes were a noticeable departure (if not a fundamentally different approach) from what the 80's guys had been doing.

I've long felt that the dominance of the '01 team cast a shadow over the program, as a whole, that we have yet to move out from under. When do we stop trying to recapture '01? When do we stop trying to "defend what is rightfully ours" as opposed to taking a pro-active approach. Of course there are central themes and lessons to be gained from looking back at the great teams that have been at Miami, but at a certain point, don't we look at a calendar and say "****...it's 2015."

If the administration believes that Butch is the guy to move the program FORWARD, then I'm all for bringing Butch into the fold, but if people are trumpeting Butch because they want to see us operate with two backs in the backfield and want to see us play man under again then I ain't with that. Interview and hire a candidate who has an identity congruent with a culture that inspires accountability and aggression. That's all it's ever been about at Miami. Toughness, incredible athleticism, and an uncommon commitment to the family.

Whether it be Tom Herman or Butch, I hope we can allow this coach to have his new day without comparing everything he does to what happened before. Butch of '15 may not be Butch of '01 and Tom Herman may not be JJ, but they both deserve to have an opportunity to finally move us into the 21st century with a brand new attack on college football.

I agree, but i still want to see a 4-3 with the cb's pressing at the LOS. Spread, prostyle, i dont care.

I don't think the majority of fans who want Bush do so because they believe he can recreate 2001 and 2002. I honestly believe it is about trusting his talent evaluation, players development and the ability to chose good assistants. He has a long track record doing that. He also travelled the country as ESPN analyst talking to coaches and studding what teams do and how they win.

People keep saying clinging to the past and living in the past all kind of BS just because he was associated with Miami glory days. I think it is about trusting him Vs. someone who is relatively new on the scene. Now, if Butch was not available, I think not many people want the other names mentioned here just because they were associated with the winning days of Miami. Most then would be asking for someone like Herman.

i didnt want him till i saw what he was capable of doing, when i saw unc i grew alot of respect for him. he would def beat fsu n protect sfla.

I know for me, it's about taking a shot to finish something that he started. This isn't a chance to rewrite history, but it is a shot to give us all some closure if he can give us 6-8 years and set us back up the way he did before, but have a plan in place for it to continue.

If he comes and has success, great, then we're going to build a statue. If he comes in and doesn't have success, we'll be ****ed, but we'll have closure. If he isn't brought in, only a Natty will get us to close the book and know we went in the right direction, and he'll haunt us until that happens.

If pete was begging sc to rehire him they would. So your point isn't valid

Jerzeycanes, you're a ***. You lectured people on here for years about how great of a coach Golden was and now you want to advise everyone about how to proceed with the next hire.
