This Poll/thread isn't for "Jai sucks" or "Jai's our savior" or whatever. Put your cards on the table and tell us what your true expecation for next season is.

Will answer my opinion when I see us add a few players to see what the roster might look like. Do we go young and build for year 2-3-4 or are we going to get it right for next season? Right now with just the rumors of the assistants we're bringing in, our budget supposedly doubling for assistants and NIL, etc... I would think the expectation internally and from those funding the operation is at least compete, top 6ish in the ACC, win a conference tournament game, and get in the dance as a 5-9 seed right away. That's the optics they're putting on themselves.

I don't expect us to be Louisville and go from dead last in the conference 2 years in a row (They were 15/15 and 15/15 and we were 14/15 and then 18/18) to 27 wins and 2nd in the conference. But I think a winning record is a good place to start. 17-20 wins. 10-11 wins in the conference and probably still miss the tournament or maybe get in a play-in game. Depends on the overall quality of the ACC if its up to normal standards, probably one of the last teams in. If its down again, definitely missing out.

To early to answer right now we don't have any commits. Will answer when we have more information.

Why should anyone wait to vote on this?

All I see on here daily is people either crowning Jai as our savior or saying he's the worst coach since Morris Buttermaker. If you can ***** about that daily without the staff fleshed out or more players on the roster, then you can click a button in the poll and hit submit. Lay it out there.

This is the point I was hoping to make with this poll. Either put it on the record, or give the guy a chance. Being skeptical is fine. Being cautiously optimistic is fine. But Jeebus-fvck...let it play out.

But in reality - our absolute ceiling next year IMO? Make the tournament. That's the ceiling. I don't care who we get, that's the one hope we all ought to have regardless of who's on staff or who Jai lands in recruiting.

Your point is valid. The *****ing back and forth on jai has been unbearable.

It's done, he's the coach. Let's talk ball now.

Somewhere around 1 or 2. Tournament is way too subjective to use as a benchmark.

If we miss the tourney but win 20 games I’ll see it as a success. If we finish middle of the pack in conference but it’s like this year where that means you’re sub-.500 (UVA finished 9th out of 18, 8-12 in conference and 15-17 overall), that’s a failure.

Well now imagine we didn’t hire Jai and triple our NIL budget because of it…. Would that be fine? Lol

Look, we were going to raise our budget anyhow (House settlement, etc.), so the question is "do you want to compete on a serious level?".

And if we (a) hire a head coach with head-coaching experience, and (b) are continuing our quest to join the Big 10, then I would argue that we were GOING TO increase our NIL to $8M a year whether we hired Lucas or not.

The point that I am making by mocking the "tripling our NIL budget" claim is that certain unintelligent porsters were citing that statistic as a self-evident point and then dropping the microphone, without providing any context. So if we spend $8M and a bunch of other schools spend $10M, are we really making ourselves better? Are we really closing the gap?

And more importantly, if you don't arm a blueblood Super Recruiter coach like Lucas with the one key piece of ammunitition he had at Texas and Kentucky and Duke (more "resources"), then you are taking away the one advantage that we "seemed" to get by hiring long-time assistant Jai Lucas over guys with more and/or better head-coaching ability.

Again, not everything is a "complaint", per se. Some of what I've posted involves sarcastic observations of what we were "promised" with this risky hire...versus what is currently being delivered.

I want to believe. I want to succeed. I want to win games and make tournaments. I'm a UM alum who can never, and will never, root for any other college basketball program. But I'm not a blind homer who will white-knight for some assistant-coach-turned-head-coach without acknowledging the massive risks, and potential failures, that come when we ask the boosters for a bunch of money THAT ISN'T ENOUGH MONEY.

As a final point of comparison, we COULD NOT even spend all the NIL money available for baseball. We simply couldn't get the top players, even when throwing money at them. Our baseball coaching is JUST THAT BAD. I'm not saying the basketball situation is as bad as the baseball situation. But if we don't have good coaching, then all the money in the world won't fix the problem.
