With one regular-season game left and Miami sitting just outside the CFP, the story of this season, to me, is Mario Cristobal’s true philosophy finally showing — game conservatism.
Once again, the final score looked solid, but anyone who’s watched this team all year knows we’re nowhere near as dominant as we should be. Mario simply does not have a killer instinct. He wants to micromanage games into “controlled wins,” but as we’ve seen against ND, UF, FSU, SMU, and now again today — even up 27–10 with about eight minutes left — we consistently refuse to stay aggressive. We never go for that knockout shot. We let teams hang around.
That’s the fatal flaw keeping us out of the playoff conversation. That, plus the fact that our OL and run game are massively overrated and strangely schemed. Why do our RBs so rarely have clean lanes? Why do we get so little push? Another poor rushing day at 2.8 YPC — that’s not what a legitimate top-12 team looks like.
Why are we so afraid to take shots down the field? I’m so sick of the line of scrimmage throws, Let the ball fly. It’s a 2-7 Virginia Tech team. At least try. We’ve got a 6’4” Josh Moore, plus Mali, JoJo, and others. Use them. Stretch the field.
Positives:
This defensive line, when healthy, is the best in the country. The talent and coaching are elite. Mesidor, Bain, Blay, Moten, Scott — they all look like future NFL dudes.
We’re missing Scott and then Thomas today but I thought the Secondary looked pretty good overall
Malachi Toney might be the best non-QB skill player we’ve had since Duke Johnson. He is a Stud
This team has the talent. What’s holding us back is the philosophy. And I’m not sure that will change moving into next season.
Let’s pray Bama loses to Auburn or VT can beat UVA. Otherwise I think it’s very likely we end up on the outside looking at #13 in the final rankings.
And that will be two years in a row of missing the opportunity to see really talented Miami teams compete on the biggest stage. As they say in A Bronx Tale “The Saddest Thing in Life is Wasted Talent”…
