LB Dallas Jeanty

We have 5 linebackers committed..... 5.... Not one, not two, not three. As it stands today we don't need anymore...

I agree...

If Miami takes another linebacker... I would take that as an indicator that they are not happy with what they have committed...

We do need 5 LBs in this class. There will only be 7 LBs on the roster after this season. Assuming no one leaves early (Grace), gets hurt, transfers, moves positions or gets kick out. Remember this is the one position where we've lost the most guys... (R. Buchannon, Figatron, Blue, E. Johnson, G. Paul, G. Terry, Witt, T. Williams, K. Nelson) All in the last 4 years.

LBs in 2016:
Commits (4): Quarterman, Pinckney, McCloud, Simmons
Returnees (7): Grace (Sr), Young (Jr), Owens (Jr), Gayot (Jr), Perry (So), McCray (RSo), King (RFr)

I think Uche will be a DE in college and he is been recruited as one. He is already 6'2 220 with one more year of HS which is bigger than McCord and Trent Harris were as true freshmen and they both got on the field. We will also have the luxury of red shirting him to gain some weight. He could easily be 6'2 245 by his RFr year.

Gil may end up as a LB in college like Gayot but he has played a lot of S in HS. This is different from a lot of smaller fast players who primarily played LB in HS and then tried to transition to S in college. He ran a 4.69 which is already faster than Dallas Crawford and around the same as Jamal Carter. Not bad for a 6-1 205 Jr in HS.

You know this staff isn't smart enough to offer This kid. They'll just keep slow playing him.

Side note: can this kid play coverage or is he another hybrid pass rusher?

Good call.. I was bamboozled... lead astray...deceived...hoodwinked... but in all seriousness best wishes for the kid and his decision.
I have to go back and chew on some of my fat... I still feel that more than 12 LBs is a bit much for one roster, but in the world of recruiting you can't put your faith in a 17 - 18 year old.. you would have to continue the recruiting process until you have signatures. But 3 deep is enough

Returnees (7): Grace (Sr), Young (Jr), Owens (Jr), Gayot (Jr), Perry (So), McCray (RSo), King (RFr) +(Chickillo, Gabriel, Goldenberg, McGinnis, Smith, Tauber) I know these guys are often over looked but they are LBs on the roster.

In 2017 you will lose 1 and pick up two... I think its plenty... but who am I...

I was surprised that Simmon's de-committed. He seemed like a hard working quiet dude who just took care of business, I really liked him.

The walk-ons are not projected to make an major impact or get significant playing time in games, if they do they usually earn a scholarship. That is why they are not counted on the depth chart. Also LB is the position I would want to carry more guys at for special teams.

Also chances are out of the 7 projected returnees, 2-3 will not be returning due to position change, transfer, injury, trouble... especially if they get passed up by the younger guys, look at the track record:

2016: Shaq, Pinckney, Zach, Simmons (de-commit)
2015: Perry, King, Gordinier (DE), George (de-commit)
2014: Young, Owens, McCray, Smith (DE), Bond (DNQ)
2013: Grace, Tucker (FB), Figs (Kick-out), Bond (DNQ)
2012: Kirby, McCord (DE), Witt (injury), Blue (Kicked-out), Terry (Kicked-out), Hoilet (DE/Transfer), Brown (de-commit), Northrup (de-commit), Burgess (de-commit)
2011: Perryman, Paul (kicked-out), Johnson (Kicked-out), Kinard (DNQ), Menocal (de-commit)
2010: Gaines, Cornelius, Cain (DE), Williams (Transfer), Nelson (Transfer), J. Johnson (de-commit)
2009: Green (DE), Armstrong (S), Harper (DNQ)
2008: Spence, Futch, Buchanon (Injury), Robinson (DE), Holton (S/FB), A. Brown (Transfer), Harding (Injury), Harper (DNQ), Marti (Left Team), Z. Kane (DNQ)
2007: A. Bailey (DE)
2006: McCarthy, K. Robinson (RB/LB)
2005: D. Sharpton, S. Adkins, E. Houston (LB/FB), D. Stewart (Transfer)
2004: R. Davis, W. Williams (Kicked-off), J. Bryant (Transfer)
2003: J. Beason, T. Gooden, G. Cook, A. Highsmith (DNQ), L. Waiters (DNQ)
2002: N. Harris (Got arrested), A. Reynolds (DNQ)
2001: R. McIntosh, L. Williams
2000: J. Vilma, D.J. Williams, D. McClover
1999: J. Weaver, J. Weaver
1998: C. Campbell, H. Clark, K. Dangerfield, S. Marshall, T. Marshall, L. Scott
1997: D. Morgan
1996: N. Webster, J. Rhodes, J. Sutton
1995: R. Mack, M. Smith
1994: J. Taylor, N. Stimson, c. Jackson
1993: R. Lewis, J. Burgess
1992: T. Russel, A. Cooley, B. Pickett
1991: R. Marley, T. Cooper
1990: C. Francis, B. Short, C. Hardy, R. Ceasar (DNQ)

My guess is we will have 12 LBs in 2016 (sign 5-6), but we will lose more than 1 in 2017 if Shaq and crew can pass some older guys on the depth chart and pick up more than 2 in 2017 to replace them. No one wants to be a career backup, it's one thing to back up an older guy but if the FR are passing you...

Also some younger guys may decide to leave when they don't want to compete or can't see themselves winning a job down the road. Look at our 2012 class when we signed 6 CBs. Howard and Gunter won starting jobs and stayed. Davis bailed during the spring once he realized he was going to be depth guy his whole career and didn't want to redshirt. Dortch and Hope both redshirted and left after 2 years when they got passed up by Burns and Corn. Crawford left when he realized he was not starting as a SR.

This is how it is at every major college, not only do you have to win your job, but you will also have to win it again the following year because the coaches are and should be recruiting to upgrade every year. If you don't improve, you need to get upgraded.

That is why I don't like kids who are looking primarily at depth charts when looking for a school. If the depth chart at a school is wide open now, great, you may get to play early but you will also lose the benefit of having a mentor. Also, if your position is weak they will most likely have a big class for your position so you will have to compete anyway. If you lose the competition, you will likely have to wait 3-4 years to start and you may not even get to redshirt because they need you for depth. And even if you win the job, they may recruit someone better next year to replace you. This happens all the time.

Around 12/13 is how many you want. But it also depends on if a few also play DE every once in a while (guys like McCord).
We need a lot of WR, DB, and Lbs in this class.

Just committed to Wisconsin

Good move on his part and I was thinking Wisc would be an great fit for him playing under Dave Aranda. But most likely this is Aranda's last year in Madison as DC, therer will be a lot of offers coming his way after the 2015 season.

Good luck to young Mr. Jeanty, I am sure he will find a pretty thick Wisconsin snow bunny to keep him warm in Madison.

Go Canes
