Going by memory on this one, but the last time I remember a Cane victory when we scored 10 or less was in 1992 when we beat Arizona 8-7. We scored a safety, a late TD pass from Toreetta to a TE (had to look this up to get the name right-Dietrich Clausell), and survived a last second FG attempt that sailed wide right on a windy day in the Orange Bowel. The safety came courtesy of the great Rusty Meaderis, who unfortunately blew out his ACL in the second half.

I asked Grok. Please excuse the typos as I didn't have my glasses on.

In 1980, the Miami Hurricanes famously upset the #9 Florida State Seminoles 10-9 on September 27 at the Orange Bowl, sealed when Miami's Jim Burt blocked FSU QB Rick Stockstill's 2-point conversion attempt in the final seconds, marking a pivotal early win for Miami under Coach Schnellenberger and kickstarting a legendary rivalry. FSU, led by Bobby Bowden and key players like Stockstill and Sam Childers (who scored their TD), had a great season but couldn't get the winning conversion, despite a late touchdown drive.

Game Details (September 27, 1980)

  • Score: Miami 10, Florida State 9.
  • Miami's Winning Play: A touchdown by QB Jim Kelly, set up by a pass interference call, and a blocked 2-point conversion by nose tackle Jim Burt to preserve the lead.
  • FSU's Near Comeback: FSU scored a late touchdown with 39 seconds left (Stockstill to Sam Childers) but failed the 2-point try.
  • Significance: This game was a massive upset and a dramatic early chapter in the intense Miami-FSU rivalry, establishing Miami's presence in college football.

I was at that game. One of my core memories is Rusty getting a cheapshotted and Barrow nearly losing his mind. I was a kid in the WEZ, but remember weird details about that game. What an insane defense.
Was on the roof (in the box) doing a mock broadcast for Cefalo's resume. The Medearis injury was devastating. '92 team had lots of close calls.
