Men Lie. Woman Lie. Numbers Don’t.

Losses suck. No way of sugar coating it. Moral victories don’t matter. This is a results oriented business. Right now, the Win/Loss results are not there.

There’s plenty to look at last week and again feel encouraged about, but there is plenty to continue to feel frustrated about. I think it’s just worth highlighting though, especially when I read Gameday posts and the post game threads, not everything is what it seems from the TV and or stands.

It was great to see the offense finally bounce back and move the ball. It’s encouraging that TVD put together a solid game. He has got a lot of slack this year. And deservedly so. But that kid is dealing with more injuries than fans are willing to rationalize. It’s not an excuse, but it should be acknowledged. After getting benched, he could have easily packed it in and bounced then and there. He didn’t, played hard, took some shots, played through injury, and played winning football. Credit given where credit due. But to my point prior, playing calling had its ups and downs but the blame doesn’t have a sole owner. Same with the defense.

The defense had a bad day. But that isn’t necessarily all on Guidry. They have played far too many plays and are banged up. When you see a TE wide open and uncovered for a TD, just because James Williams is closest player, doesn’t mean it was his assignment. The INT by Kam was an amazing play. If he does not make an All American play on that ball, it’s a TD. We all blame him for the TD when he is in the area. But Damari Brown completely forgot to cover that player on that play. The point is that play calls, execution, and result are a product of a ton of factors. That goes for the offense as well. The 4th down play that we didn’t get. Go back and watch the effort by the WRs on the top of screen. Not good routes. JG ran a slant overtop of the Corner. Not a recipe for success. Was the play call perfect. Maybe not, but full blame isn’t all on Dawson.

The sum of all that, the team is not in Sync fully. Right Now. I’ll touch on more that below, but for now, here are the numbers.

The Good.

Won’t highlight a single unit. But as Team, we continue to respond in positive ways. Saturday, the offense did. QB play bounced back in a big way against a good defense. Matter of fact, the whole offense did. We just went on a stretch of NC State, FSU, and UL which are all top 25-30 defenses depending on how you look at it. Like much of the season, the team plays bad or does something head scratching, and responds. It wasn’t enough as a team, but the offense has come a long way from last year. Long way to go. But being able to run effectively almost every game, is very encouraging. Do we remember how bad WR play was last year? The top 3 have really pieced together solid seasons. Still a lot of room for improvement.

The Meh +
The Bad.
Playing winning football. I’m putting these together. Because it’s bad, but in the Macro it’s fixable. We are a good team. But we are a team not in sync. That’s from the HC to the bottom of the org. I can reference all season. But last Saturday, two PF for punching players in the face are absolutely devastating in critical moments. We can blame coaches for decision making. But, those two penalties eliminated almost any chance of coming back to win the game. Closing out the first half. I agree and understand the approach of running and playing normal pace for the first 1st down before going into 2 min. A lot of teams do it, Lousivile did it when the got the ball back. But we ran and then attempt a pass. The rb runs out of bounds instead of getting upfield for more yards. 3rd and 1 or 2 now. You’re successful running it up untill that point. Fine run it and then get into 2 min. But let’s make it less obvious or run something with creativity. We don’t need to be in Jumbo set or 12 perosnel. The decision wasn’t the issue to close the half, the execution from the OC to the players was.

Those are small examples. I referenced the
4th down at the goal. From the OC to the players, it’s not in sync. On defense, there was way too much getting caught sleeping and falling for the eye candy. That’s on players and on the coaches for not having the guys locked in.

That Lousiville game, a lot like some other games, was pivotal for multiple reasons. We played well, but not well enough. We need to learn to play winning football and capitalize on these games. If we aren’t 6-4 going into that game and still loose the same way, is it that bad a loss? No. But we are 6-4 and it was a tough loss. The team at a Macro is playing much better. These past two games are games in years past the players fold and we get blown out. The Macro shows progress. But the Micro is not good. And MC preaches about doing the little things right. Head scratching.

Moral of the Story.
Not all is bad. And not all is good. We are so close, yet so far. Record aside, this team has improved year over year a lot. Every game this year has been winnable and we have been in winning positions. Same can’t be said for the past several years. But as I said early, this is a results business. The top man is paid a lot of money to win games. Year 2 is on a close. There’s still 2 games to play and get better. A lot can be pushed in the right direction the next two games. Winning helps.

I personally think Mario is the guy to get it done. No one cares about Miami more. I see the vision and think we are in the direction. But make no mistake about it, it’s **** or get of the pot time next year. He has had plenty of time to recruit and develop. He will have had time to get the culture to how he wants. He went from lossing big to lossing close in year 2. Have to win year 3, especially with the schedule we have.

For now, there’s one last game and a bowl game. Then Mario’s “money making time”. A win Saturday helps in the right direction. Multiple practices and a bowl game matter. I think anyone that has played in college or been around a team will attest, bowl game practices are some of the biggest development times for Freshman and Sophomores. Need to capitalize there and continue in the right direction. Recruiting and the portal are critical To close out this cycle. Time for the team and Mario to put their big boy pants on these next few months.

Go Canes.
