Concord (Calif.) De La Salle defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie made his way across the country last week to check out the University of Miami and the University of Florida for his first trips to either campus.
-The first stop for the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder was Miami, where he has a long standing relationship the Hurricanes’ defensive line coach Jethro Franklin. McKenzie’s father, Reggie, worked with Franklin in the early 2000’s as members of the Green Bay Packers organization.
-Says “It was a really good trip,” “I had a lot of fun. I met with coach Jethro for a little while, so it was really cool to get to see him. I haven’t seen him in about three or four years.
-Says “It was great to see Miami and see what they are all about. That was my first time ever being in Miami. It was a really good first impression, everything was really nice.”
-Much of McKenzie’s time in Coral Gables was spent catching up with Franklin.
-Says “Most of the time we were talking like we were family. I’ve known him since I was about five years old, so were were just talking about football and stuff. We really didn’t talk too much about football, just catching up. We talked some football and showed me what they were going run. He said he would have me outside in 3-4 technique. Most of the time, it was me and him talking, having a good time.”
-The second stop in the Sunshine State was Gainesville, where McKenzie got to see a Gators’ spring practice.
-Says “It was a really good trip up to Florida too,” “I got to see their first day of pads this spring. It was a real intense practice, it was good to see all the that they are about over there at Florida.”
-Florida’s California recruiter Brian White is leading the charge for McKenzie, but head coach Will Muschamp made sure to give his pitch to the four-star prospect during his time on campus.
-Says “I got the chance to sit and met with coach Muschamp for a bit. He was just telling me what they are about at Florida, what he’s trying to do, how he thinks this season is going to go this year, just that kind of stuff.”
-The visits to the Florida schools were only the start of McKenzie travel plans. In a couple weeks, five more schools are expected to get him on campus.
-Says “When I have my Easter break, I’ll be going to UCLA, Tennessee, Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon,” McKenzie said. “My spring break starts April 14 through like the 26th. UCLA is the first school and all of them are in that time period, I don’t know the exact days.”
-he still remains rather open on his college decision.
-Says “It’s hard to say [a leader] because a lot of them are recruiting me hard, especially when some of them weren’t recruiting me hard and then in the past couple weeks it’s really been picking up. It’s hard to say if I have a favorite right now, but really just keeping the process open right now and exploring all of my options.”
-In fact, do not look for McKenzie to come to a decision in quite some time.
-Says “My thought process right now is a signing day decision,” “During the season, I really want to be focused on just the season and winning a state championship and not blowing it away like last year. That’s going to be my main focus during football season.
-If I can get in an official visit, I might, but I’m not going to try and sacrifice my football schedule for an official visit...I want to take all of my officials before I make any sort of decision. That way I have a clear vision of what I want to do.”
