When you're the starting quarterback at Newhall Hart, expectations are always high.

The school has a rich tradition at the glamour position and so far Brady White seems unfazed by the pressure that comes with living up to the success of his predecessors. On Friday night, he put on an aerial display all of them would be proud of -- outdueling Miami-bound counterpart Brad Kaaya while completing 36 of 53 passes for 490 yards and a school record-tying seven touchdowns in the Indians' 55-54 overtime triumph over West Hills Chaminade at College of the Canyons.*

White found Wes Fitzpatrick in stride for a 23-yard touchdown in overtime, then the Indians' defense stepped up when linebacker Cody Shoemaker tackled Donovan Lee in the backfield when Chaminade went for two points after pulling within a point on Dymond Lee's 8-yard scoring reception on the Eagles' first overtime possession.

"I'm taking it a game at a time and looking to make a successful career for myself," White said. "We were ahead at halftime and they couldn't stop us. We all knew it, we all felt it. As for records, to be up there with those NFL guys like [Kyle] Boller and Matt Moore ... it's a dream of mine."*

Mike Herrington, who has coached his share of All-CIF signal-callers in his 25 years at the helm, including Moore, Boller, Ryan Connors, Kyle Matter and Tyler Lyon, thinks his latest project could prove to be among the best and already White's stellar play has attracted attention from elite NCAA Division I programs like California, Colorado, Florida, Nothwestern, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Vanderbilt.

"Brad's worked so hard on his game -- his vision, his accuracy, his decision-making his ability to read defenses -- he has a great work ethic," said Brady's cousin, senior receiver Chase White. "Some of the plays he made tonight he wouldn't have made as a sophomore. He stands in there and takes the hits whereas last year he would tuck it and run."

White's coolness in the face of a blitz was never more evident than on his sixth touchdown in the fourth quarter, when he stood in the pocket until the last possible instant, stepped up to avoid a sack and delivered a strike to Connor Wingenroth in the end zone for a 48-41 lead with 7:11 left. Hart (2-0) is ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division and 12th in the Southland by The Times.***

One week after setting a new school-record with 36 completions in a 56-49 victory at Corona Santiago (eclipsing Matter's mark of 34 against Burbank in 2000), the 6-3, 185-pound White picked up right where he left off against the Eagles, throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. Perhaps most impressive is that he did not throw an interception.

"Brady's a very accurate passer and we have a lot of confidence in him," said wide receiver Davis Koppenhaver, who caught eight passes in the opener and added 13 more for 141 yards Friday -- including a 13-yarder between two defenders that gave the Indians a 28-17 lead late in the second quarter and a 17-yard scoring grab in perfect stride early in the third quarter. White finished just two yards shy of Matter's single-game mark of 492 yards against Saugus in 1999. White's seven touchdowns tied the Hart record set by Boller against Burbank in 1998.**

Don't be surprised if White owns many more Hart passing records by the time he graduates.

"Obviously, people on the outside will look at it as competition, but Brad [Kaaya] and I are buddies," said White, still only a junior. "He's a great quarterback and he played great also."

"It's a huge win for us and definitely boosts our confidence going into the bye week."*

Wingenroth ran for a school-record 99-yard touchdown in the first quarter. White's primary deep threat was Trent Irwin, who caught nine passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. White was sacked once -- on the first play from scrimmage -- yet still had the nimbleness to shake down two tacklers and avoid a safety.

"Our offense helped out the defense tonight," Chase White added. "I think the reason that they went for two in overtime is because they were tired and they knew we were scoring every time. They ran their bread-and-butter play, the power pitch, and we were ready for it."

Kaaya finished 16 of 37 for 370 yards and three touchdowns and Donovan Lee ran for two scores and added a touchdown catch for Chaminade (1-1), ranked No. 8 by The Times and No. 2 in the Western Division.

Golden is HC now. There are 3 qbs in front of Brad when he gets here. No longer are we putting every egg in sight into one basket. Him and Olsen might both ride pine next year. Williams won FL state championship, had two years under Jeb and will have year to get use to Coley. If not, next man up Cow or Olsen. If not Brad gets shot. Bet Golden brings in two more qbs next year too. Man is never, ever going to be in the postion in found himself in that first year. Brad will be a great Miami QB, but he might have to wait 2 or 3 years -- how great is that. Al clearly does not want to crack eggs before that are ready to hatch ever again. I think Burns and Coley are the 3 and 4 best players on the team after Duke and DP, yet no burn in the gator game. Al is no longer in panic mode. This year he will straighten out the RB and DT depth problem. Every other position is looking just about right, even saftey doesn't look that bad when you consider Bush is coming back and Carter is able to learn without getting the crap beat out of him. If had not lost Collins last year, only DT would remain.
