John Jancek Out at Tennessee

That is surprising. Monster talent on that team. Huge aspirations. I saw somebody question their #8 preseason ranking for next season. Must not have been paying much attention. Tennessee is one of the most physically imposing teams in the country. They pushed around Oklahoma for the vast majority of that game and should have led far greater than 17-0 before initiating the choke. They also battled Alabama man for man without need to resort to trick plays like Mississippi did. Tennessee led that game on the road until the final minutes. They they destroyed a very good Northwestern team in the bowl.

Butch Jones still is very well liked by the Volunteer faithful, despite the late choke jobs this season. Next year the expectations will be considerably higher. Maybe he thinks Jancek underachieved this year, giving up the late leads to Oklahoma and Florida. Those were semi fluke outcomes, IMO. Both Oklahoma and Florida had to pull off 5 or 6 unlikely plays down the stretch, any one of which would have maintained the outcome in Tennessee's favor. From what I saw Tennessee remained aggressive on those plays but simply was burned through narrow windows.

I wonder if Jancek threw his name in the hat for the UM DC gig and Jones found out and fired him. Seems like an odd firing coming off a great bowl game with a ton of momentum as a program.

I remember a few years ago when Brian Kelly was at Cincy, and his DC Joe Tressey (sp?) reached out to UM about the DC gig. Kelly fired him.

I kinda like Jancek. Somewhat surprised by this even though it was rumored. Shouldn't take him long to find a new gig.

Nope. A ut fan said last week that he was hearing jancek would be gone and it wasn't him leaving for another job. The guy said he heard that jones was planning on making a change at dc.

It's a fair question, but it's not the issue here. Lots of internal blame for both their collapses against OU and UF directed at Jancek. He made some poor calls, but the offense is escaping blame, mostly because the new OC is close with Jones. You might almost call it a Golden-D'O romance.

Maybe that last part is embellishment.

That's pretty odd that they'd pin the OU game on Jancek. UT's offense destroyed them in that game. Their defense was actually swarming and nasty for a good part of that game.

Very odd timing on a firing like this with all the momentum UT has going.

The good news is that Butch is a choker. They will fold multiple times a year, no matter their talent.

No playoff threat.

It's a puzzling scapegoat. UT literally manages 3-4 more first downs and they're finishing in an entirely different strata. Additionally, how their WR coach still has a job is more amazing. *** is a great recruiter, but their leading WR had like 400 yards.
