John Donavon to Washington

Obviously.

But, still, he made these separate decisions within 10 months of each other.

So that's still a big issue.

Not really.

Enos was supposed to have elements of the spread with his pro-style offense said to "confuse defenses" yet all it did was confuse fans in regards to how bad it was.

Diaz whiffed on Enos, but to his credit fired the guy in less than a calendar year—and sounds like his slapdick buddy Butch Barry may be out the door with him.

Diaz absolutely failed year one, but pointless to try and use the firing of Enos and hiring of Lashlee as some kind of dig against him. Enos didn't do what he was supposed to do and he was canned as a result.

(Enos also was coming off a successful year at Alabama coaching up Tagovailoa and Hurts and was set to inherit the offensive coordinator title from Saban with Locksley gone. Meanwhile Donavon ran a putrid offense at Penn State and lost his job as a result. Night and day.)

All of this has absolutely zero bearing on Washington going through candidates this off-season and hiring a secondary guy that has a completely different offense than they were set to run.

When you look at the Jacksonville Jaguars offense and you just need to have a deep staff member from the league's 20th best offense, I guess you just gotta trust your gut and go with it.

wasnt saban a defensive minded guy? i think smart, had he landed enos, wouldve been fine bc of their OL and QB play, but lost out on enos and ended up with coley

Isn’t that the point though? What Smart wants from his offense is always going to require the offense to significantly out talent the defense, because his preferred scheme is so bad.
So with Smart the qualifier is always going to be, “Yeah, but I think his QB and OL might be able to overcome it.” That’s not what you want from your offensive system.

Yup.

Defensive guys tend to hire OC's that will protect their Defense by playing slow paced ball control offense, they stay conservative because they don't want their Defense having to be on the field too much, but what's funny is playing ultra conservative ball control style offense just leads to more 3 & outs which puts their Defense back on the field anyway lol.

Having a lead also helps.

What happens when you hire a DC as head coach and he has no connections.

Defensive minded guys make the worst HCs because of their OC hires. Just seems to be a trend in cfb right now... even Kirby Smart, despite all of their success, if he hired a good innovative OC he probably already has a NC ring

I’m very surprised Coley is still employed there.

can you imagine that defense with someone like Yost or Rich Rodriguez running the offense?

Not sure I agree. First a DC should know what kinds of offenses give him the most fits. Second, coaching "connections" may come by way of going toe to toe with each other. Lashlee had no prior working relationship with Diaz, nor Enos. But they had both faced Diaz competitively and respected his coaching ability.

Despite what some may think Diaz is a respected defensive mind among coaches. Was brought in by knowledgeable, successful, and respected head coaches like Brown, Mullen, and Richt.

If HC doesn't pan out for Diaz I bet he gets a DC gig at a major program if he wants it.

He's learning the ropes to be a successful HC and jury is still out for me. This off season was going to tell a lot about Diaz. It's not over yet and so far he's keeping it interesting, to say the least.
