Wisky tries to find lineman that play hockey also as they have good balance and great footwork.
Wrestling enhances strength. A wrestler is engaged for 2 or 3 minutes versus say a OL or DL for only several seconds. It also enhances balance, coordination, and endurance.
At McArthur in the late 60'a and early 70's, the wrestling HC - John Lyzotte - won 10-12 straight state championships. The irony is that he discouraged his guys from playing football. He believed playing football diminished the skills necessary to be great wrestlers.
No doubt. Lyzotte would start recruiting kids in middle school. He was on me from 6th grade. Even changed my schedule in HS to get me in his science classes. LOLMcAurthur Wrestling was a Powerhouse back in those days. My uncles “Waldens” all wrestled for that program! Legendary!!!
I get it, but how big is wrestling in the recruiting stomping grounds of our staff.Being stuck here in the heart of nittany lion country I get hammered with Penn State crap constantly.
Saw an interesting interview couple weeks ago on TV with James Franklin regarding recruiting. He says his staff intentionally try to recruit two-sport athletes. Specifically they want football players with wrestling backgrounds. He says wrestlers come in with a mental toughness and a work ethic that a lot of other athletes don't have.
I found this interesting with all the talk earlier in the season about canes players not working hard in practices or not being mentally prepared for games. I'm certainly not saying give up on the high end south florida talent, but Diaz might want to think about this approach, especially with the trench players.
Thoughts?
