James Ash

Seemed real excited about his Wake commitment just a few weeks ago. Maybe he didn't think UM was a possibility. Claims an LSU offer.. I'm skeptical.
 
6'2/3 280lbs with 4.79 shuttle & huge hands with a crazy long wingspan, has a great frame & carries his weight well. He's a lean 280, could easily get up to 310lbs & still look like a DE.

This kid is a prototype 3-tech rusher, he had 45tcks 19TFL's & 5 sacks his Junior year. He's disruptive, understands how to engage lineman & shed blocks. This kid stays in the backfield & can really move.

I'm all in with this flip if the staff wants him, I like him at 3-tech DT or even as a Strong Side DE.

Who do you think is better between Ash & Neal?

Ash, but they're 2 different types of DT's.

Ash is a pass rushing 3-tech & Neal is more of 1-tech or 0-tech. Neal is a stout run stuffing Nose Tackle, would fit perfect in a 3-4. Ash is a prototypical 4-3 interior rusher, with enough versatility to play DE as well.

I like both, but Ash has the ideal measurables & size you want in a DT for our style of Defense, his upside at the next level gives him the edge imo, but both are very good.
 
With Diaz/Baker system...(assuming an 8 man DT stable, some years you may dip down to 7, but try to avoid that...I am including any possible redshirts in these numbers)

It just seems like they want:

-1-2 big run stuffers... (Miller, Ford, that's why they may be passing on Neal, and passed on Pinder for instance)
-1-2 that can play in either capacity (Silvera, maybe Holley, basically an upfield, aggressive 4-3 defenses VERSION of a run stuffer who can play the 0 or 1, but couldn't play there in Bama's version of a 3-4 though, or would have to be really special to do so)
and
-4 up field, 3tech types (Bethel, the UCLA kid, maybe Elijah Roberts and Riggins play between 285-300/USUALLY come in in the 260-275 range,, most of the time a little taller, but sometimes a Bethel or Riggins type if he's quick enough)...If needed one of these guys may be able to slide out to SSDE if needed, or if there's a year you are light or have injuries/youth then maybe you move your best SSDE inside on passing downs.

I think ash fits with what Diaz likes to do as a defense but neal is what we need a guy who can take a double team. Our defenses biggest weakness is a run first team. Neal is the take imo

In the 4-2-5 scheme Baker/Diaz runs the 2 gap lineman are typically bigger guys in the mold of a Ford/Miller type, tall long arms & powerful, they can take on double teams just as well as a smaller DT could. Jared Harrison-Hunte is also in that role as well, he's a big 6'4 286 kid that is stout vs run & can get up the field as disruptive pass rusher.

Neal is a perfect 3-4 NT, he's just like Michael Pierce from the Ravens, those smaller bowling ball types that are 2-gap pressure lineman that free up blockers for the Edge OLB's to get one on one's.

Ash is a physical freak at 6'3 with a **** near 80inch wingspan & 11inch hands, that's Kawhi Leonard size mitts. He would play the same role that RJ, Willis & Nesta are playing now, as the interior disruptor who can get in the backfield vs the run but their main priority is to get after the QB.

Look at the current DL's we have, Nesta is 6'2 305lbs, Pat Bethel is 6'3 280-290lbs, Jordan Miller is 6'4 320+, John Ford is 6'5 300+, Chigozie Nnoruka is 6'2 290lbs, Jared Harrison-Hunte is 6'4 286lbs, Jason Blissett is 6'3 270+, Jalar Holley is 6'2 280lbs, the staff doesn't really recruit the smaller stout run stuffing NT's because they're not a scheme fit.

I like Neal a lot too, but if the staff likes Ash & feels he's a better fit in our Defense I understand why we wouldn't go after Neal or Pinder.

In my opinion James Ash has all the physical tools you want in a DT, that being said wasn't his play underwhelming at the Orlando opening for someone that has all the physical attributes. Correct if I'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure he did not perform well at the Opening against top competition. It was this one video where he went up against the same OL 3 times and got his **** handed to him each time; it was probably against a high rated OL, but still it would have been good to at least win one rep.
