How does the star rating work anyway?

Merrick has about 50 offers, including offers from UF, FSU, Oklahoma and just about EVERY major FBS school, yet he's rated 3 stars. I don't get it.

Looking at his offer list, I'd say he's definitely a 5 star.

Pretty sure sites rank them based on what their recruiting analysts say about them.
 
In addition to what was mentioned above, linemen typically don't get rated as highly, particularly if they're interior linemen. The reason is because it's the most difficult position to evaluate and most of these wanna-be scouts have no idea what to look for. So they give a generic 3-star to linemen unless they are tackles where feet and length easily standout.
 
How are we looking for this kid? I know we were a favorite at one point but he is visiting FSU this weekend and he likes them

His family are lifetime UM season ticket holders, his dad went to UM. The kid is just enjoying the process and trying to get his rating up, in the end he will be a cane. The recruiting process is one of the few times linemen get treated like kings, so why not have a little fun.

To the OP, Merrick is rated as a 3* because he didn't participate in alot of the camp circuit, so the recruiting services penalize recruits to a certain degree for avoiding the camp evaluation process.

Other sites have us listed as 3rd. They feel a UF /FSU battle. Hope you are right. We need lineman badly.
 
Merrick has been to almost every Miami home game this season. If his parents are as ****es at golden as we are. I dont see him coming here. I think he goes to UF ultimately

was about to say the samething, imo he is a gator unless they have another season like last year
 
The parents holding season tickets means nothing. Refer to Khairi Clark last year. I think we have a shot for Merrick but he's far from a cane lock. We'll see how everything plays out.
 
Have a feeling he enjoyed himself yesterday and loved what he saw...nothing better than seeing 2 true freshman OL maul the competition

Very true, not to mention it is looking like Art Kehoe is regaining his HOF coaching prowess, because the 2nd half of this season is a Oline clinic, which is amazing considering the amount of oline turnover.

FWIW, Arkansas thinks they have a good shot with Merrick. They think they get him and the N1 OG on ESPN (dont remember his name) since Tratolla threw the TD pass, theses dudes are delusional as ****!
They havent won a SEC games in what 17 games i think and they think they can get everybody they want....
