I know the timing of this is a little odd as we don't face the Tar Heels for a while. But we have the week off, so here goes.

Since the game we played last year when he torched us on the Baker Blitz Bust, I have been adamant that this dude is not that good. This year I have seen him hyped as "NFL ready" and"The second best QB in the country". I am determined to prove that he is not that good. So with an open mind, I have scrolled through tape and numbers to see if I am close to what I thought. At the end of it, I have come away with the opinion that I don't know.

His numbers are arguably the best a freshman has produced (although a tick below Lawrence and Tua's Sophmore year), but arguably better than Johnny Football, and squinty when they won their Heisman's as freshmen. He was also statistically better than Russel Wilson (I think he is a poor man's version), but he isn't the same runner. I also had a look at what Phil Longo's other Qb's have done and he outshines them as well.

He throws a good deep ball, he can read the full field (at times) and at other times stares down receivers or panics a fraction when the first read isn't there, but he was a TF. His footwork (although I am by no means knowledgable on this, I am from approximately 12 000 miles from Chapel Hill, in another hemisphere) appears really sound.

I can't wait for this thread go down in flames, but I just wanted some others peoples thoughts.

When you put up numbers like Howell did, the comparables are with people who excelled in college and are now playing in the NFL.

In Sam Howells case, its still too early to know if his performance last year was an outlier, baseline or ceiling for performance.

Some people shine as true freshmen and never look back and then you have people who flash and crash.

The jury is still out on Sam Howell but no doubt, he is good.

King vs UAB 66% 1 TD 0 INT + 6 yards / attempt + 83 rush 1 TD
Howell vs Cuse 73% 1:2 TD:INT + 8.6 yards / attempt + 12 rush yards 0 TD

He doesn't throw one of those picks and I say pretty, pretty, pretty good showing against an ACC team in Week 1.

Cuse seems to do a pretty good job of confusing QB's: Howell and Sims threw multiple INT's and 1 of Pickett's 2 INTs on the year was vs Cuse.

As for tape- Howell throws a really catchable football, usually puts the deep ball where only his guy can get it, obviously he's really accurate, athletic enough, can hit deep outs, plays smart with the ball. Being coached by a real QB coach helps.

In Tamorrion Terry case I think he is good , he just play for a terrible team , the Qb is terrible and the Oline is even worse , he can’t even finish his route before Blackman is down.I know that could be frustrating and bring s player morale down , if he went to Alabama he would be a first to second rounder.

he also doesnt have harey and pope dropping passes, tripping over their own feet, breaking routes, and running out of bounds

4th and seventeen is stuck in my head

He’s pretty **** good but there’s a lot of people out there that love UNC basketball and want UNC football to be relevant. So he gets a little benefit of the doubt, for sure.

I don’t really have anything meaningful to add to this discussion but I wanna commend you for hating on Sam Howell. I hope your mission to expose him as s fraud proves successful because I’m tired of the media slobbing his ****.

Imo Phil Longo is a great coordinator who makes Howell look better than he really is as well

I went back and edited my post because you are likely right, Terry is a product of a terrible system. Put him on our roster with King and he would eat.

I totally agree with you nycane. It's time to reward good play and hold the receivers accountable. To be on the field you have to make the play when it comes to you. Another glaring problem of the receivers, they don't attack the ball in the air. Waiting for it to come in your lap or chest gives DBs a chance to make a play on the ball. They need to be taught to attack the ball in the air before it hit their chest. Harley needs to grab and tuck it in and not hold it out like a loaf of bread. He has the weirdest way of catching passes.

Hope I'm not too critical but we may need every possible play from our receivers against better competition like Clemson in 2 weeks. I have full confidence the game plan will be solid from Rhett Lashlee come game day, we just need better execution from our receivers.

Pope and Haley look like little kids playing with adults. Like they are scared. Pope is worse than. Watch plays. He breaks routes. Step out of bounds. It’s clumsy. Can’t hold onto the ball. He’s just not made for this level. He’s a junior and it’s still not clicking.
