Read through a few articles this week. Some things stood out.
Palm Beach Post:
Richt was not happy with the game plan, saying he asked too much of quarterback Malik Rosier when it came to the running game. “As far as a coaching error, in my opinion, we had too much run game where the quarterback could pull or not - a lot of zone read - and because of it Malik ends up with 16 carries,” Richt said. “I want the ball in our backs’ hands more than we had.”
That should be the mantra for the entire season, Coach. Oline has to get their ***** together. Grant Coach that wish and I don't think it will matter much who is at QB. The run game cures all.
"Miami had left guard Jahair Jones making the line calls during Sunday’s game so center Tyler Gauthier could concentrate on hiking the ball to Rosier. Coaches felt the crowd noise could be an issue. "
Ooof. I think we all assumed it was Rosier making the calls. Instead, a new starter was. Ugh. Glad to see Gauthier get the reigns.
Another Post article:
Diaz was asked if he is going to tightened the rotation and used the opportunity to express his frustration. “It might be the opposite,” he said. “How many guys do you have that have proven they can play at a high level? If anything, we need to reduce the feeling of entitlement. We need a good old competition to find out who our best guys are, now that the games are here and we’re not reading about ourselves, to find out who’s really serious about this.”
Quarterman spoke of the importance of players speaking up. “It’s very important,” he said, adding that players always have had a voice at Miami. “It can’t be the coaches. A coach-led team cannot win a championship. It has to be a player-led team. It has to be people on the team willing to step out front and be the one to say, ‘enough is enough.’ We have a lot of those guys on the team.”
That right there, folks. This is up to the players. The leaders have to find their voice, hold the others accountable and lead by example.
"And Diaz found time to praise a couple of true freshmen, Al Blades Jr. and DJ Ivey, who saw more playing time after starting cornerback Trajan Bandy was ejected early for targeting.
“Al came in there and did not blink,” Diaz said. “It was not too big for him, I mean, he covered maybe their best guy foot-for-foot. Al was very encouraging the way he played in there.
“And then DJ Ivey played the majority of the last third of the game and you had the same feeling with DJ, it didn’t seem too big for DJ. Did a nice job. Wasn’t challenged with a pass, but kind of did his job and looked like he knew what he was doing.”"
There were a few freshmen that played, more than I noticed. On the whole, they did well.
After reading a ton of content this week what I'm beginning to think is that the new wave is coming based on coach speak and player comments. New blood is slowly being entered into the equation. Upperclassmen not performing have been put on notice. Other QBs are getting run with the 1s. Young defensive backs are getting opportunities (forced or not). Now, about that punter...
I looked at this season as three mini-seasons. #1 was the LSU game where the guys with experience were going to be given the majority of snaps. #2 is the next three games, where new blood can move up the depth chart based on game play, not just practice. I also thought, based on how #12 played in mini-season #1, a new starter could emerge and begin vying for playing time. I think we all know how that went. Mini-season #2 is where the staff can play around in the petri dish and see what this team can grow into for season #3 which is the deciding stretch. Mini-season #3 is where the run for the Coastal title really begins. Hopefully, the new starting QB can drive the ship with a semi-trusty backup in Rosier to take over if there is an injury (or total meltdown). One caveat is that if the run game really emerges (I mean dominates), #12 may still be the guy until the next meltdown.
Guess we'll all see over the next few weeks. Season #3 is where the rotation has solidified and we'll see who our QB is. I think it will be a new guy. If Coach is true to his word, we'll see a lot of freshmen the next three weeks. There really is no better opportunity to use up the red-shirt games available to them. After FIU, there is no let up.
