Interesting tackling numbers

IDGAF what PFF says, our defenders consistently look lost in run support, again.
Several times last week we had the Duke RB bottled up, only for him to make us look like...

Most turnovers by a winning team was 11 by Purdue vs. Illinois in 1943.

Well, for one he’s always been the biggest kid on the field, so those bad techniques have been w/ him since HS. Some players love the highlight hits vs. fundamental tackling. He’s constantly trying to drive his shoulders in to players & on this level, that’s nit going to cut it.

Couple that w/ a year of bad techniques added from the previous staff, & voila.
Still gotta question the "Star Rating" gurus who supposedly "evaluate" HS talent. The definition of what supposedly constitutes a 5 star player was clearly lost on them with 0.

Separate but related topic. Noticed that Cormani is 6'2, 165. I thought a 5 star was given that rating because they'd be ready to start immediately in college. Clearly, McClain will need another 20 pounds, minimum, before he can hope to play the run.

I mean our defense was terrible last year. The fact that our best defensive players are guys who weren’t here last year isn’t the least bit surprising. So now the defense is slightly improved but the offense fell off a cliff. Probably should have worked on getting more transfers on that side of the ball too.

247 uses future NFL prospects as the determining factor. They have 32 five star guys for the 32 first round draft picks.

For anyone that is an underclassmen, it is time to stop blaming the wrong people. These guys have had as much time with Mario as they had with lisp. They look worse this year than last year. So it could be that ham kitchen and Williams are irredeemable scrubs. Or we have a defensive back coaching problem in this staff.

Kam & JWill stat wise r off to a better start this yr than last yr; actually way better.

Now, again, I mentioned William’s techniques since HS (from what I saw). Both of these young men have talent, that’s clear, but there’s too much free lacking going on, & w/ Williams, he’s doing the same irresponsible chit as last season.

W/ that said, it could very well be the latter of ur statement.

I saw a very bright future at the safety position after last season from what looked like super talented young guys that would be a strength of the D for a few years to come.

And I am neither here to defend Manny, nor am I here having compared stats and metrics.

They just straight look bad this year. I am not a coach, nor am I keeping an official tally of my WTF moments. It is eye test, and in my view the safety position looks like the worst unit on the defense.

This. We’re talking about sophomores. They’ve had just as much time with the current coaches as they had with the old ones. You can only blame so much on the “last guy”. If James Williams still can’t tackle, it’s just as much on the current guys.

How is it humanly possible to be rated a 5 star DB prospect and not know how to tackle? Wouldn't have thought that was possible.
Because rankings are built on what some nerd on 247 thinks X player will do in college.
Add that to- it's based on offers (who isn't offering a 6'5 safety?) coming in. Some programs offer 300 players.
...and combine drills.
Can you run the 40? Jump high? And do some turny BS COD drill you've practiced to game the test well? Cool. 4*

"Rankers" are getting the same Texas Chainsaw snuff footage you're seeing of games on Hudl.
They also don't know how to watch film to know that if Donaldson is going against a 5'9 155# slap, he should throw him and stay up, not fall over.
Can Isishahs Walker even put his heel down in his OL stance? What 247 slap knows to look for that?
Then he goes to the bigger camp and it's some cheesy 1on1 pass rush drill where the 'coach' stands there 10y deep and gets 'tagged' because QB's just stand there 10y deep and don't step up in the pocket (well... maybe Garcia doesn't)

When does a "247 rankmaster" see this guy tackle someone of equal ability all ranking process?
Maybe he sees equal tape if your team plays IMG National, STA, a big game vs a GA team, or a TX team, Central or Am Heritage. That's about it.
What does a 247 wranker know about tackling? tracking? clamps? leg drive? re-acceleration? leverage?

Does he have access to full games or just Williams' Uncle Roscoe's home made highlight tape?
Coaches have access to all of your games, do they make a good bad and ugly tape? They should.
Then you have hubris. "My drill where he steps over bags 3x back and forth, climbs through a ball pit, and then pulls the flag from the giant nose that spills gak before diving into (wonder why we see that in games) and dry fudging an inflatable doll of an alligator pool float = gonna fix him, bruh

here endeth the lesson.

Kids (13-20) can add 20 pounds in months! Testosterone and HGH are amazing drugs. He is a rail which likely means he hasn't worked out or been on a training table in his life.

JW0 isn't good enough in space to play S. His body type isn't that of a LB let alone DE (some are saying he should move there). If he did move in the box, he would be competing with 31 for WLB or they move him to Star vs 23/3. Great athlete, not a great S.

Kam outside of the mental mistakes that cost us UNC and MSTU has played pretty well for a first-year starter. His future is bright if he can commit to being a SAFETY vs big play hunter. The big plays will come if he just commits to being SAFETY first.

If you can’t tackle, you can’t play anywhere on a defense.

If we had him bottled up that means steele has the ply called correctly. It’s on the players to make the plays. Your post makes zero sense

He’s also done nothing but produce good defenses pretty much everywhere he’s ever been.

If I had to bet, I’d be willing to wager our players who were ****** last year still being ****** more than a 40 year coaching veteran forgetting how to coach in one off-season. Might be a hot take tho, idk.

Multifactorial, of course, but considering how little we've practiced tackling for the last few years, I'm not sure we should be surprised by minimal initial improvement. Let's be clear: it's been YEARS since we properly hit and tackled in practice. Kind of a big deal.

Selected other factors include: (1) bad angles, (2) playing guys who don't have the requisite short area, (3) being terrible at zone, so the holes are enormous to close (and potentially miss).
