Interesting article on RBs and carries

I don't post it for my take, but since you asked, I find it interesting that RBs are beginning to understand the value of not being "the man", even in high school. That likely makes recruiting different as you don't have to promise immediate bell cow status. It also may make it easier to try to recruit multiple "starter" quality backs and for them to accept those shared roles once enrolled.

That was a hard sell when a recruit came from 30+ touches a game in high school, maybe its not so hard now.

And with the portal, anything that helps you keep recruits you actually want is key.

college rb's should want less work load with it shared. to many players in college have there legs run off so when get to nfl are done look at monte ball with Wisconsin. there are more but the fact is its better for kids long term future if get 15-20 carries instead of 40 like Jonathon taylor with wisky

Seems like most of Saban’s Bama RBs are done by the time they get to the league.

For good reason the thinking has always been that you put up numbers to impress scouts, but that's changing. The NFL is mostly going on measurables these days- look at all the recent Miami guys in the league who didn't do much in college. Teams know these guys have the potential and don't care that much that they weren't great college players. Duke was one of the best backs in the NCAA, but teams didn't see the size they wanted to take him early. If you have the skills and measurables, it won't take a ton of carries to convince a team to draft you.

There's definitely advantages to the RBs with less carries long term. Obviously there are outliers. Also, having a stable full of RBs is so advantageous especially when they bring different skill sets. Go Canes!

I don't think RB carries are going down - this was just an off year.

An RB's amount of carries before the NFL is overrated IMO. It's just the workload once a RB is in the NFL that needs to be monitored.

I don't know any RB's that say they burnt out in college because of too many carries in high school, or they burnt out in the NFL because of too many carries in college.

When the Colts drafter EJ, Bill Polian made a comment that one of the reasons he was #1 on their board(higher than Ricky Williams), was that he had more tread left on his tires. EJ split with JJ and Najeh. Ricky Williams was the guy at Texas and they drove him. Kids need to understand that dynamic. Crowded backfields are good for you if you’re good enough to be in the rotation.

Go Canes!
