Hurricanes add new defensive position. Here's what it involves and who's playing it.

So mccloud and perry are the sam in the base defense. Smith, finley, wilder are the sam/striker in the nickel.

So that means if bandy doesnt start at outside at corner then he will have to split his reps at nickel with the striker.

I personally would rather have a corner out there instead of a safety or LB trying to play man on a wr.

There you go. That's the difference between playing a 4-2-5 and traditional "nickel" 4-2-5. Instead of relying on a third linebacker or undersized corner to counter spread teams on running downs, you utilize a third safety(or rover, or striker) that is better against the pass than a traditional LB and better against the run than a traditional nickel corner. Thank you for realizing it's 2018, Manny Diaz.

I think its kind of stupid. So mccloud and perry are the sam in the base defense. Smith, finley, wilder are the sam/striker in the nickel.

I have a feeling Bandy will be one of our outside corners. Also, I think the Rover position in a 4-2-5 look is really well suited to the kind of "tweener" athletes we see in So. Fla especially going forward.

From same article--
"Who has been the hardest receiver for the cornerbacks to cover this spring? "

“Lawrence Cager, when he’s on, when he’s that guy, Cager is pretty tough with his length,” Rumph said. “But [it’s] Jeff Thomas without a doubt. Just the speed aspect, something the ACC is not going to be used to seeing. I can’t wait to see the other corners try to run with him. He’s not just a fast guy; he’s doing things exactly right. The guy Jeff Thomas reminds me of is Santana moss, Roscoe Parrish. He understands how dynamic he is.”

Agree. TCU and other schools have had great success with these kinds of tweener kids, and So Florida produces more of those types of athletes than anywhere else in the country.

Love the name of the position and the concept. With the pass happy offenses of today, having the fastest guy on the field in obvious passing downs can only be an advantage. TE's and RB's won't have such an advantage against smaller corners.

Bandy might start on the outside. Rumph said today he was competing vs dean for it.

My issue is its hybrid and all these different positions. If you are going to play a 4-2-5 then commit to it and recruit for it.

You’re not adding a new position “just” because two older players are hurt. This striker position is a part of the base defense now. We see too much spread for it not to be. When Perry and Mcloud get back they may become specialty players.

When teams go with two TEs and power football that would be their time. Considering how much spread we see Perry and McCloud will probably have to switch positions to get any substantial time.

They are not switching positions because diaz isn't going to a full on 4-2-5. He is still recruiting for a 4-3.

Solomon may not be 200 lbs. Jahmar Brown is another guy under 200 lbs. Listed at LBs but smaller than both Finley and Smith as recruits. Those two would fit this striker role.
Size wise they would fit but brown said diaz wants him at wlb.
