On Thursday afternoon, former FGCU guard and grad transfer Zachary Johnson announced his intentions on Twitter to play out his final season of eligibility at the University of Miami. He had taken a visit to Coral Gables this past weekend, followed by a couple of visits to Louisville and Creighton later in the week before making his decision. And unlike the other transfers in Kameron McGusty and Anthony Mack, Johnson’s eligibility to play this upcoming season is guaranteed as the others will have to sit out a year, barring any approved waivers. This past season, he averaged 16.1 points/game and led the Eagles to the Atlantic Sun conference championship game, where he scored 37 points. The Canes gained a great scorer who has taken strides in improving his scoring ability but also his all-around game and he will play a big role in replacing draft-bound guards Lonnie Walker and Bruce Brown.

This is actually going to be a homecoming of some sorts for Johnson as he played high school basketball down here in South Florida. He spent his first three years at Miramar High before teaming up with current UM forward Dewan Huell at Miami Norland to win a state championship. With Johnson officially on board, it now makes the decision of Huell to enter and possible stay in the draft much more interesting. Huell did not hire an agent, so returning to Miami is still an option, and the addition of his old teammate can prove to be extremely enticing.

I would also hope to think that he wants to play with Huell and spoke to Huell to get a feel where Heull's head is at in regards to returning.
