What is a dead period?

During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.

Blake has told people that it's a consideration, but not a deal breaker. I think he intends to have this done by the end of the week. Having some time before the dead period could make or break this class. Especially needed for early entries.

I think it's important. Ultimately you want to just hire the "right" coach, but if you can do that before the dead period its a win win...

I agree with this and I'll say it depends on who you're planning to hire.

Alabama and Michigan waited past the dead period for Saban and Harbaugh. If you're committed to hiring who you believe is the right coach, you wait to seal the deal.

If it's not done before dead period it's because we think we can get someone better than Davis

Correct There are no recruiting restrictions for any students that has signed a Grant in Aid agreement GIA...everyone else is off limits no contact... Students can contact the coach..but the coach can't reach out to any kids

IF they can reach out to the coach than I do not see it being that big of a deal if you are waiting for your top target. I would assume any kid that has legit interest would be picking up the phone immediately to talk to the new guy.

Coach cannot make contact with a recruit that has not signed a GIA...

That's the truth. If you aren't talking to them, somebody else is, and there will be a ton of flips in the next 2 1/2 months.

It's a period of time when college coaches can't contact the recruits (but the recruits can contact the coaches)...

I don't know when the dead period starts and ends this year - I think it's usually a couple weeks in December, though...
