Aren’t media hits a requirement in his contract?
Certain ones are (pre-game/post-game press conferences, weekly conferences with all media), and other ones aren't (call-ins to radio shows).

This is in the same part of the book as the saying, "the cover up is worse than the crime. " Many times things will just go away if you say "I messed up and I'm accountable." but when it's clear to every observer that you are hiding the truth, it makes things worse.
All Mario had to do was answer a few softball questions from Joe Rose. He wasn't sitting across from Jim Rome who's going to call him "Crissy" the entire interview. Fans on message boards could then spend all week debating whether Mario understands the problems or if his coach speak is just hiding the fact that things have gotten out of hand. But to not show up as scheduled for no reason besides "I'm sulking and I don't want to talk about the game"? That's throwing gasoline on the dumpster fire.
Always wondered about the radio show. Seems like it’s a staple of coaching here, so wasn’t sure if it was included or if it was just a thing they all did.Certain ones are (pre-game/post-game press conferences, weekly conferences with all media), and other ones aren't (call-ins to radio shows).
I agree
What’s so wrong with just saying I ***ed up
But ducking the media bro, the fans want to crucify you bro and be held accountable for your answers to softball questions bro, WAHHHHHHH bring back MannyMario doesn't strike me as a dumb guy. I'm sure he realizes the only thing that matters right now is beating UNC. There are plenty of long term issues that will take time to fix, but he needs a win or the season derails completely. Everything else is secondary. Media appearances and all that mean nothing in the long run.

Manny never turned down an opportunity to Blab..But ducking the media bro, the fans want to crucify you bro and be held accountable for your answers to softball questions bro, WAHHHHHHH bring back Manny
I think that was directed a BSmith and probably the best thing he’s done on the sideline so far. The dumb extra penalties feel like they are down (recency/anecdotal bias possibly).
I've tried to explain this to some of the mopers, but they don't want to listen.
I don't have Mario's contract in front of me. But I'm familiar with what the normal requirements are at UM, from JJ onward, from working on the UM newspaper all the way up to now (one of my undergrad roommates has worked for the UM Athletic Department for over 25 years).
If a coach agrees to do a weekly TV show, it becomes a requirement. There are some other requirements that are set at a conference level, such as pre-game/post-game press conferences, and thus each coach's contract requires him to fulfill these conference-mandated events (it's done at a conference level so that a jagoff coach like Urban Meyer can't "refuse" or opt out of it because he has contract leverage with his employer-university).
All the other stuff is based on what a coach chooses to do. If Mario wants to chat with Gary Ferman, it's up to him, there is no contractual requirement. Same with radio call-in shows. At different times of the year, coaches do more press (pre-season hype) and at other times they do less (before big games).
But there are entitled fans who act like when a coach makes some sort of semi-occasional routine, it suddenly becomes an unbreakable obligation. And that's not true. Plus, these same mopey fans are distorting the "pointing-out-of-a-fact" (that Mario is not obligated to speak to Joe Rose every week) into "excuse-making".
Mario did his mea culpa on Saturday night. Only the misery-loving mopes want to turn it into a weeklong restatement of the obvious.
