Grading the coaching hires 3 years later

2022 was a pretty momentous year for coaching turnover at big programs. After 3 years we can somewhat see the trajectory of the programs.

A+ Lanning, Lashlee
A Freeman, Deboer and Elko. Only 2 years so A instead of A+
A- Mario 10-2 is still 10-2 and he inherited a poor situation

B Sunbelt Billy- is definitely trending up
B- Sonny Dykes- trending down but a championship appearance is worth something

C Tony Elliot and Brent Pry
C- Lincoln Reilly- lot of close losses like Texas year 2 but isn’t recruiting well

F Brian Kelly and Venables. Probably done in 1-2 years.

I was referring to the hires 3 years ago. Deboer and Elko both did phenomenal jobs at UW and Duke. Deboer took them to the NC game. That deserves an A. He beat Lanning 3 times also in 2 years.

What they did at different schools counts for their grades today? I guess if we’re giving away lifetime achievement awards.
 
Being objective Mario gets a B-. When you have to fire half your coaches for the 2nd time, before year 4 it’s a problem. I don’t see any scenario where we return 6 or more coaches on this staff. Likely we have 5 return and 5 new.
 
Update on rankings:
Lashlee from A+ to maybe a B
Freeman A+ (made it to NC games)
Deboer: D lost to prison Mike, lost the fanbase, 6-5 in last 11 games.
Brian Kelly and Venables: def not an F. a lot better than what your rankings were

and my favorite Sunbelt Billy
is there a grade low enough for this guy?
horrible play calling, team falls apart at end of close games, spitting at other players, looks like he is lost out there and in denial.

Shows how hard it is to find a great coach. I'd put Freemen and Lashlee in the "good ROI" category. Several on here would still disagree, but I also put Mario in that group, have since we hired him. Billy and Mikey go in the "bad ROI" category. After that, lots of unknowns.
