What's the deal with college football contracts. It's not like baseball where a coaches contract ends and he becomes a free agent. What exactly does an extension do? Why would Miami put a big buyout on an extension when it was Miami that was trying to keep him around, not prove they won't fire him.

If the whole point of these extensions is to include a buyout to give the coach security, why'd they fire Shannon right after signing his?

It really comes down to Athletic Directors not negotiating a contract to its fullest extent. AD's look good when they make a 'splash' hire, so they tend to agree to things they normally shouldn't in an effort to close the deal.

Perhaps the greatest AD in college athletics today, Tom Jurich of Louisville has a policy of NEVER putting buyouts into his coaches' contracts. Ive seen him say in an interview that he firmly believes that a person should have the right to be terminated if they don't perform, contract buyouts go against that mindset. Hence, no coach at the university of Louisville has a buyout on their contract. And last I checked, they didn't have any problem hiring top shelf coaches.

As for extensions, that's long since been believed to be a component of recruiting. If coach A offers a kid a scholarship and tells him he will win the hypesman trophy while on campus, coach B will tell that kid, "Coach A only has 2 years left on his deal and university A doesnt seem interested in renewing his contract. Hmmm??? For this reason, extensions should be done in a timely manner but there should absolutely be a zero buyout clause attached.

Eh, not really. We have the ability to see what was in Larry's and Randy's contracts, so we have a pretty good idea of how UM rolls.

Funny because Petrino has a $10 million buyout and morality clause. An oh yeah these two are supposedly very good Friends, I think they are an important CYA mechanism in the fluid coaching merry go round.

Even if he had a buyout that is "large", a few things need to be understood:

1) if he got a HC gig within the immediate future, the buyout is terminated.
2) if both sides wanted him to move on, they could easily negotiate it down or eliminate it: Al becomes more hireable if schools don't have to pay a buyout fee on top of his salary. Randy milked his buyout by not seeking employment as a HC. I think Al would try for a HC immediately and would get one immediately a la Zook.
3) a buyout is NOT the full value of a contract. It typically ends up amounting to a year or two salary. 4 million is insignificant. If every fan who attended FSU donated 100 dollars, they could pay it overnight. It's not hard to raise that kind of cash, AND it's not a lump sum.
