Tell me why in today's modern college game we couldn't run a base "Miami 4-3".

When they first arrived, I used to think that what AG and D were doing was clever: be multiple so u can handle every type of offense. But ive returned to my belief that I'd so much rather the coaches teaching fundamentals, general concepts, and position techniques as opposed to coaching toward a scheme.

Al is an elite recruiter, as are his staff members. If they recruited this area hard, why couldn't it still work? Why reinvent the wheel.

I'm looking for real x and Os discussion here: we can save the "This soft zone mentlity stinks" type comments.

Any scheme can work, including the one we currently have.

The problem is Golden is struggling to implement his scheme.

I don't care what we run. I just want us to sustain a dominant defense. We're not even close right now.

Any scheme can work, it just boils down to personnel and what the players can/can't do.

For example: I don't mind the 3-4 but i think 2-gapping is killing us. A 1-gap variant would work better IMO. Our guys are trying to 2-gap and they're just staying engaged.

You're asking more of the players when you're telling them to 2-gap.

I don't think it's about scheme as much as it's about the PRINCIPLES within the scheme.

Sorry, not a coach. But our Jimmies are not tackling their Joes. Until that gets fixed no scheme will work. We seem to still be "unteaching" tackling because our players seem to get worse the longer they are here. That was happening before Al got here and continues. Our old game films were clinics on tackling, what the heck happened?

We also used to be up on guys in their face. When they caught the ball a guy was there to make a tackle. Now a kid has to come up 5-7 yards in space to make the stop. I saw a lot of that in the Va Tech game. Every OC wants to get his guy the ball in space so he can work. All we did was allow guys to catch the ball in space.

its a TEAM sport and when one guy lags...pick a guy on this team they all lag,..things go terribly wrong.

once we get real leaders and guys that play as one we will be fine..we have a group of tranfers, jucos, frosh, jrs out there..no chemistry..

One guy can make the difference..
