Miami methodically took care of Pitt 38-7 After falling behind 7-3 after largely dominating the first quarter, the #Canes took over this game. I know it's out of their hands at the moment, but today I saw a playoff caliber team. I hope this team gets another shot to play some meaningful football this season
- After some early breakdowns on the back end of the defense, they really stifled Mason Heintshel with pressure upfront. Ruben Bain got home a few times, and interior guys like Ahmed Moten continue to come on. To hold Pitt to 7 points at home is impressive. Since their QB change, Pitt had routinely put up 30-plus points in ACC play since their QB switch earlier in the year
The Panthers were held to 11 first downs and less than 230 yards of total offense. Cory Heatherman has been a Godsend for Miami as the DC
- Should Malachi Toney actually get some Heisman votes? Forget All-Freshman honors, he's way beyond that at this point. He is the most unique offensive weapon in college football and in Miami history. With him on the field, Miami essentially has a 2-QB offense. He is Roy Hobbs,
- Shannon Dawson should be lauded for his creativity. This is not the same dull, boring unit we saw in Dallas. Really like the jet sweep motions with Toney, increased use of the Pistol formation, and just trusting Carson Beck to throw on early downs. Now, I didn't like that Fletcher to Beck gadget near the goal line. At that time, you just feed Fletcher and get behind that Oline -- which they eventually did
- Miami got the performance they needed. Whether that's enough remains to be seen. But I will say that post-SMU we saw some different things. Maybe Mario Cristobal is evolving right before our eyes. They even threw deep into the endzone to CJ Daniels for the final score. Hey, that's the mindset this program and Mario needs to have beyond this season. This needs to be part of the core identity of Miami football
And the cold NEVER mattered.
10-2 in year 4 after losing the number one pick in the draft. Yeah, the SMU loss will always be bothersome, but with that said, my hats off to Cristobal and this staff for rebounding and showing some character.
