A strong second-half defensive performance propelled the University of Miami men’s basketball past No. 11 North Carolina, 75-66, Tuesday inside the Watsco Center.

Miami (19-5, 8-3 ACC) held the Tar Heels to just 26.5% shooting in the final 20 minutes and 1-of-14 from the beyond the arc to secure the program’s first win over a ranked team since Jan. 3, 2024.

Great win.

First half the defense was fantastic and Henderson seemed to take the freshman hype (well deserved) for Wilson a little personal. I love when Henderson is aggressive on offense. UM did a great job of not only causing live ball TO’s, but of turning them into points. The only team I have seen that does this as well as UM, is U of M. Both teams dominate games in the paint.

If UNC does not make so many 3 pointers, and from bench players, UM leads by 10 at half.

Second half both teams ran out of gas and the shooting took a tremendous dip. It was expected from UM considering that we only play 8, and Altuntas and Dovrat don't play many minutes. So it’s almost a 6 person lineup with Tru (need him back immediately).

I love Caleb Wilson. The school at which I coach Middle School basketball is in the same league as Wilson, and he destroyed our Varsity team over 2 seasons. BUT he was not great today. He had a few spectacular plays, but he missed on a lot of routine plays. And calling for the clear out against Henderson is silly. Henderson is strong enough, and long enough to defend Wilson.
UNC is good, but they aren’t great. And they are not head and shoulders better than UM.

We should be happy, but should also expect UM to be competitive against almost every team. And UM is an NCAA team. They need to keep playing like it, but they are good enough to make the tourney and even win a few games.
