On Friday night, the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes improved their record to 3-0 after defeating the (2-1) Wake Forest Demon Deacons 33-20. The second half was not pretty, however, veteran defensive back Ethan O'Connor came through when the Hurricanes needed him to.

Wake Forest was trying to make a second-half comeback and had multiple chances to get the game within one possession. However, O'Connor put the nail in the coffin by picking off Gio Lopez, ending the Demon Deacons' hopes of a comeback.



He spoke to the media after the game-sealing interception, here is what he had to say after the play: "Right before that play, not getting the football. That was something I was thinking about. I was like, I gotta make it up my guys, and I just allowed my technique, but needed the guy behind me too, and I just made the play."

Last season, O'Connor faced adversity from several Hurricanes fans after the national championship game, where he was beaten on back-shoulder throws twice by Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Last night's interception was a great response with his pick being the first interceptions on the season.

Wake Forest was throwing O'Connor's way all night, targeting him six times, allowing four catches for 36 yards. O'Connor led the Hurricanes defense with eight tackles and one interception. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the highest-graded defensive player in the win.

Last season, O'Connor recorded a total of 28 tackles and five pass breakups. Prior to Miami, he played at Washington State with Jack ****ert, where he recorded a total of 32 tackles, eight pass breakups, and four interceptions.

I think EOC gets unfairly hated on... i think he's a great CB and will have a big year for us

I think people would much rather critique and nitpick, so if the season goes left they can say “i saw the issue first - look how smart i am”

He made a **** of a play and to my eyes has been more than solid in coverage.

 

I think a lot of us are still upset/down on him because of the natty. He played well vs Wake and I give him props on getting that pick. Hopefully he continues to get better.

 

O’Connor is our best corner. I thought he was last season as well. Wake’s WR who made a catch on him is big and looks fast. Yet he had to make tough catches against O’Connor. The same can be said of Indiana’s WR Charlie Becker. When O’Connor is beaten it’s by guys making great plays.

It’s people who don’t know ball. Charlie Becker is better than any WR in the ACC except Malachi.

There will be a lot of revisionist history once O’Connor is in the NFL and Becker is a high draft pick.

We have a weird board, actual scrub players get protection and actual good players who have made plays but if they get beat by ELITE talent get dragged thru the mud.. WILD

It blows my mind when the film and numbers show he on a whole different plane even compared to dudes like jeremiah.. Back shoulders are contested catches.. and he is the best in all of cfb

 

Ethan is right up there with OJ and X in the CB room. He's just smaller.

 

Needed a play in a huge way and he showed up.
