Miami spring wrap
By Andrea Adelson | ESPN.com

Three things we learned in the spring about the Miami Hurricanes:

1. Dallas Crawford will help on D. Miami surprised many when it decided to move Crawford from running back to safety. But the switch should end up benefiting both the Canes' D and Crawford in the long-term. Initially recruited to play safety, Crawford made himself at home in the defensive backfield and impressed coaches. He was named most improved player on defense for the spring.

2. Bulked-up Duke Johnson. While Johnson was held out of contact drills as he rehabbed a broken ankle, he did participate on a limited basis this spring. But bigger than that was the way he transformed his body. Johnson put on 10 pounds and is now up to 205. The hope is that more weight translates into better durability. Miami will need to rely on him more than ever in 2014.

3. Depth at linebacker. Coach Al Golden said one of the biggest accomplishments his team made this spring was building depth at linebacker. Miami hopes to count on all-ACC performer Denzel Perryman (now in the middle), along with Alex Figueroa, Raphael Kirby, Thurston Armbrister, Jermaine Grace, JaWand Blue and early enrollee freshmen Juwon Young and Darrion Owens.

Three questions for the fall:

1. Who will cut it at QB? Miami caught a tough break when projected starting quarterback Ryan Williams tore his ACL during a scrimmage and underwent surgery. Though there is some hope Williams could return before the season ends, Miami has to prepare Kevin Olsen and Gray Crow for the starting job. Olsen, the favorite to win the starting job, did not impress in the spring game. Neither did Crow.

2. Improvement on D? Coaches insisted this spring that they saw a better, more cohesive defensive unit, one in which leaders emerged in Perryman and Tracy Howard, among others. Will the progress coaches saw in the spring translate into more consistent performances during the season? Chief on the list of improvements is a better four-man rush and improving on third downs.

3. Pass rush. Speaking of pass rush, Miami was pleased with what it saw out of hybrid rush ends Al-Quadin Muhammad and Tyriq McCord this spring. Their emergence will be a huge key toward improving the Hurricanes’ pass rush. Ufomba Kamalu and Jelani Hamilton also started playing better as the spring went on, so Miami feels better about its depth across the line headed into the fall.

One way-too-early prediction:

Miami will take a step back this year. The Hurricanes go into the season with question marks at quarterback and continued questions on defense. Couple that with a difficult schedule -- featuring perhaps the most difficult crossover games in the ACC against Florida State, Louisville – and it will be tough for the Canes to match their nine-win total from last season.

Here's her predictions for the other ACC teams:

Louisville: Louisville will win at least eight games. The Cardinals do have a hard schedule and play in the toughest division in the ACC. But they should win at least three nonconference games and be in position to win every ACC game despite losing players like Bridgewater. Charlie Strong left behind a strong foundation. Petrino has dealt with a tougher conference, and knows what it takes to win

NC: The big question at the end of 2013 remains unanswered after the spring of 2014: In UNC the inexperienced group that started 1-5 last year or the red-hot team that finished 6-1? It’s certainly encouraging that last year’s freshman have continued to show improvement, and that makes UNC an early contender in the Coastal. The Heels might be the most complete team in the division, but unless they improve on both sides of the line, more inconsistency could await this fall.

NC State: Yes, the Wolfpack were 0-8 in ACC play last season, but there weren’t many blowouts. Doeren’s crew showed plenty of fight despite a litany of problems, and that’s a good sign for what’s to come in 2014. The big change, however, is Brissett, who breathes new life into the offense and provides some real direction for NC State going forward. A conference title probably isn’t in the cards, but a bowl appearance wouldn’t be unrealistic.

Pitt: Voytik has the persona that will endear him to Pitt fans early. The first half of the season is full of winnable games for Pitt, which means Voytik will be one of the surprises in the ACC through at least October.

'Cuse: Shafer said he is aiming for eight wins this season, and he will get there, albeit with a 13th game. There is no shame in that, as consecutive winning seasons in a coach's first two campaigns -- both of which are in a new, tougher conference -- would serve as a tangible sign of progress, especially in the Atlantic Division.

Virginia: The Cavs open the season against UCLA at home. London’s players know they are playing for their coach’s job, and a Week 1 win against a likely Top 25 preseason team would reduce the early season heat on London’s seat. Virginia will battle UCLA and offer some promise for the remaining 11 games of the 2014 season.

Va Tech: The Hokies win eight games. Virginia Tech goes 3-1 against the nonconference schedule and beats ACC opponents Georgia Tech, Miami, Boston College, Wake Forest and Virginia. They’ll benefit from the crossover schedule, take advantage of the Thursday night game against Miami, but will lose the battle on Tobacco Road.

Wake Forest: Odds are it’s going to be a rough first year for Clawson in Winston-Salem, but he also isn’t likely to be judging his team’s progress simply on wins and losses. Clawson is trying to change the culture at Wake Forest, and that’s a long-term project. In time, he’ll be able to sell recruits on that culture, restock a barren roster and get the Deacons back on track. But for now, Clawson will have to make the best of what he’s got — which means six wins is likely a long way off.

Ga Tech: Thomas and Byerly will make many people forget about Vad Lee. Sure, Lee's decision to transfer was a bit of a surprise, and neither of his potential replacements boast much meaningful college experience. But Thomas and Byerly have said and done all the right things this spring and, more important, Georgia Tech brings back what may be the best receiving corps of the Johnson era, led by DeAndre Smelter, Micheal Summers and Darren Waller.

FSU: The Noles were an offensive juggernaut in 2013, but the offense will sputter some against quality defenses. The issue at receiver is one that will not be settled in the near future, and it could cost Florida State a game.

Duke: Duke will be the preseason favorite in the Coastal. The days when the Blue Devils were penciled in to finish last are gone. The defending division champions return 17 starters, including Boone and All-ACC receiver Jamison Crowder. Their schedule is also very manageable, with crossover divisional games against Wake Forest and Syracuse.

Clemson: Clemson will lose its sixth straight game to rival South Carolina. Clemson will have the edge on defense, but if the Tigers couldn’t beat South Carolina with an all-star cast that included Watkins and Boyd, then it’s going to take more than defensive end Vic Beasley to beat the Gamecocks without them.

BC: BC's progress will not be reflected in its record in 2014. That might be a tough reality for a program that absolutely shattered expectations in Addazio's first year, and he certainly has the Eagles ahead of schedule, but BC probably loses too much veteran production on both sides of the ball to win eight or more games in 2014.

VaTech will lose the Duke/UNC basketball game? I'll tune in for that.

It is just hard to get excited based on the past two seasons. I am prepping for the worst and hoping for the best. Keep the vaseline handy boys, we dont want to get rammed with out lube.

That means they will lose in conference to Pitt, Duke and UNC

So Pitt has a better chance against them than us. They play @ Pitt the Thursday before. We have an off week and 12 days to prepare for VT.

I really dont think we can take a step back from what we saw last year. we have a healthier and hungrier team then last year. we were trying to find an identity last year and this year i think we know what we want.

I'm still going to be just as excited as any other year. It's just a matter of how long that excitement lasts, lol. As long as Duke is healthy, don't expect us to get pounded by anyone. Duke carried us until he got hurt. We were even faintly hanging with FSU until Duke went down.

We didn't have much of a QB last year either. If Olsen sucks this year, he's going to suck while fighting tooth and nail; Morris was the kind of kid that would run out of bounds on fourth down, short of the first down marker. He had no fight in him. Olsen is going to scrap some games games out for us.

no way we take a step back

I think she means that we'll take a step back in the win column. She has a legitimate point, not saying I agree. A tougher schedule plus a question mark at QB could mean a few extra losses. We're going to be a better team this year regardless. It's impossible the we're not.

keep doubting the Canes lets when we show up just need to get that emotion on the field again and start playing with swagger

Duke is a playmaker. He is a tremendous part of our offense.

When Duke plays, our offense plays much better.

Look at that UNC game last year. He gets hurt early (midway through the 1st Quarter) but before the injury he had 8 carries for 83 Yards. The guy was on pace for 200 rushing yards by halftime, my guess is if Dallas Crawford could run for 140 against UNC than Duke could run for 250.

(This is what Duke does)

He leaves early and the offense gets weird. Morris went on to throw 3 more INTS (4 in total) and almost threw the game away too.

Duke changes our offense for the better. He is electric and he makes plays. When he is in the game, he is a threat for a big play and the opposing defense must focus of him. His abilities make it easier for a QB. Duke, along with Yearby, are really necessary for this team.

We're going with some freshman at QB (Kaaya, Olsen or Rosier), so a healthy Duke is key.

you live in a fantasy world. we will take a step back this year, and thats scary considering we were AWFUL down the stretch last year.

the defense is completely broken and exposed. once they start giving up points in bunches and the pressure to score rides on teh back of a FR QB with no experience, it will get ugly

no way we take a step back

you my friend are in for a long ride.....this team has 7-5 written all over it

How do you figure? we pretty much have the same team that went 9-4 by the way people act like we went 3-8 or something. thats better defensively talent wise. more weapons in the offense then last year. a healthy team thus far and if our QB cant throw better then a 57% completion rate that stephen Morris put up last year then i will def agree with you. a 65% completion rate should be a 10 win season IMO

This is not the same team as last year. you people dont get it. all you think about is last year. this is a new team. we are way better this year. we are not returning garbage. if we are living off last year. then how is UNC who went 7-6 last year. yes freaking 7-6 ranked #15 in the pre-season top 25. you guys are not even looking at the whole picture. Our Qb situation is not as bad as you think it is. calm down dammit

Agree with this. If Duke and Coley don't go down Miami wins at least 10 games. Both healthy and Miami is a better team regardless of what happens on defense.

I hate to admit it, but this is most likely where we'll end up. Like WestEndZone pointed out, we have a tough schedule and a huge question mark at QB and add to that another huge question mark on D and a 7-5 record is sadly realistic! I really hope not tho! I hope they're a completely different team, more disciplined and mature and end up shocking the college football world but the end to last year, mixed with the last decade, leaves little optimism.

For starters, it is the weakest senior class that Golden will have worked with as its his "scramble class". We are breaking in a new freshman QB with road trips to Louisville, Blacksburg (haven't won there since 05) and Lincoln. FSU and Duke (yes I said Duke) rolls into town and based off of last years team, no ACC game is easy with what we witnessed against UNC, Wake and GT. Cincy and Ark St. will be harder games than most think so given all of that, losing 5 games is extremely realistic.

Am big on our freshman - juniors but unless Mark and James change their ways this team is a constant 8-4 7-5 team and allowing inferior teams to hang around. We have talent on the roster but utilizing them properly is the epic fail this staff is going to sink on unless they change. The bowl game exposed everything and genuinely struggle to believe that all of a sudden things are trending upwards since.
