Not being flippant, but did you see the play? Also, the announcers diagramed it just afterwards. And the receivers coach met him coming off the field pointing as if he was directing him to stay in the route.
Lastly, no timing route calls for the receiver to break that late in the route. If you can pull it up (somehow) watch it again.

Obviating saw the play, but did not see anything you described after the play. Sounds like George screwed up. Pretty dumb.
