Does anyone have a list of our football staff from 2000?

I'd like to compare our staff then, as it was probably one of our elite staffs during our last elite period as a program, to the staff Richt is putting together.

I'd like to see how many of the coaches on that staff were "monster names" BEFORE Davis hired them and how many of them actually developed into big-time coaches over time.

But who strength coach?

Great staff. I'd be interested to see what jobs they all held prior to signing on with UM, and see how many were established, and how many Butch "found".

I looked up a couple and one was Coker. Surprising pedigree. I never realized he spent one year as JJ's OC at Ok State.

Larry Coker--Not an elite hire. Here's where Coker was when Davis hired him as OC: 1993–1994 Ohio St. DEFENSIVE BACKS Coach;
1995 Ohio St. QB Coach.

Greg Schiano--Not an elite hire. Here's Schiano's immediate history prior to being hired: 1991–1995 Penn State DB Coach; 1996–1997 Chicago Bears Defensive Assistant; 1998 Chicago Bears DB Coach.

Dudzinski--Not an elite hire. Chud's background: 1994–1995 University of Miami (Graduate assistant).

Vernon Hargreaves--Not an elite hire. Hargreaves came to Miami after 13 seasons on the staff at the University of Connecticut, where he was outside linebackers coach from 1985-89 and inside linebackers coach from 1989-97.

Curtis Johnson--Not an elite hire. 1994 SMU (WR); 1995 Cal (WR). He had a good background but nothing earth shattering.

Kehoe--Not an elite hire. Kehoe was the TE Coach and an Offensive Line Assistant when Davis hired him.

Greg Mark--Not an elite hire. Mark was a GA at UM until 1994. He spent one year as Utah State's DL Coach and then Davis hired him.

Pagano--Not an elite hire. 1992–1994 East Carolina coached defensive backs and linebackers.

Soldinger--Not an elite hire. Was a HS Coach.

So there you have it. Our last great staff, which produced multiple HCs and coordinators, had ZERO elite hires when the hires were made. None of those guys were guys that anyone on here would have been jumping up and down about at the time they were hired. With the benefit of time and seeing their careers develop, we can see that several of them turned into great football coaches.

Hopefully, we'll see the same thing with some of Richt's "questionable" hires. You never know if Banda or Rumph might develop into the next Pagano for example. We had no idea Pagano was going to be the HC of the Colts when we hired him from East Carolina.

I had no idea he had that experience/pedigree. Anyone know the nature of his departures from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma?

You don't remember him constantly bragging about coaching Barry Sanders?

Use to make want to punch ol' Fester in the neck.

Forgot Schiano was a first time DC when Butch hired him.

Also Sol was not just a high school coach. When Butch hired him it was his second time on a UM staff.

He previously was on JJ's staff.

Amazing staff.

To be fair though, many of those staffers became big when they left Miami or while on that team

Being a good coach is having the ability to identify good talent not just in players, but in coaches as well. This is what made Butch's lack of gameday coaching so valuable. Richt has had some decent staffs during his time in UGA. I believe he selected coach Kool given that he needed a sure thing at the d-line.

It's an amazing staff as we sit here in 2016. It wasn't an amazing staff when Davis put it together. In fact, if this board was around back then, many posters (me included) would be killing those guys.

We have no idea right now how our current staff will develop. But it'll be interesting to see if Richt has put together a staff that will eventually gel and develop.

Great thread, BTW.
