Don't need to convince anyone about the importance of a dominant defensive line. But how far away are we from "elite"? At times, our line has looked great. But many people have been concerned about our DT recruiting in the last two cycles... the lack of numbers and depth issues due to transfers, attrition, and dudes leaving early.

So here is a simple breakdown of where Miami is on the defensive line, numbers wise, compared to two similar programs - Clemson and Ohio State. I picked those programs because they are elite, have good defenses, and they run 4-3's.

Ohio State:

Total number of scholarship DL: 16
Total number of 4/5 star DL: 12
Current Recruiting Class: ONE 5-star DT, TWO 4-star DT signed

Clemson:

Total number of scholarship DL: 12
Total number of 4/5 star DL: 10
Current Recruiting Class: TWO 5-star DL, ONE 4 star

Finally...

Miami is looking at:

Total number of scholarship DL: 8
Total number of 4/5 star DL: 5
Current Recruiting Class: ONE 4-star DT, One 3-star DE

** Ford and Garvin are both 4-stars on the 247 composite, even though 247's site was bugged when I took this screen shot.

Overall, I don't think we're as ****ed as some people think. It's important that we hang on to Nesta and, if at all possible, add another highly ranked kid to the class. I don't think we have a problem with quality, but I think we would be a better team if we could add a handful more studs.

And it seems 2019 is going to have to be like this year was/is with DB's. We will have to dip in to a very deep class at DT/DE and fill up.

You can cross out Norton and RJ. Guess we're going to have to get some of those elite south Florida 3 stars since our 3 stars are better the everyone elses 4 stars. (sarcasm)

Not directed at OP whatsoever, but it has been interesting watching the heel turn of a handful of posters over the last week on an issue that has been looking us in the face for over a year.

Attrition in whatever form it may be has to be assumed at all times. In three classes, we may very well be looking at only two converted DE's in Martin and Bethel, two true DTs in Ford and Nesta for a three year haul. While those players may turn out to be good or even great individually, the lack of foresight is a disastrously shortsighted failure on the staff's part that is going to be an absolute **** show when we line up in 2019.

Think to yourselves, what is this defense going to look like if we only close with Nesta and Chatfield, then lose two or more prolific true juniors after next years season in Joe Jackson and any of the linebacker trio.

Yep. 2019 is the year the wheels fall off of the defense. Linebacker and D line recruiting has been awful. What are we going to do at linebacker in 2019?

Point still stands, but Garvin was a four star

so was Ford

On the 247 composite? The screenshot shows both as not ranked... but it could just be a problem with the site. I'll update the OP if the info is incorrect.

Don't know what the other guy is talking about, but here are there profiles.

OK thanks man, I updated the OP.

It's on Richt.. he's the CEO .
The plant manager falls on his shoulders. I'll wait to see if this is gonna destroy the program or keep it moving.

DL is an absolute mess.

Gets even worse when you consider 3 of our top 4 dlinemen are locks to leave after 2018 (JJ, Djax, and Willis)

Yep. Short changed DL is a death knell. Never want to short change a DL in recruiting for the exact reasons we’ve seen the past 2 years (injuries, attrition, nfl). Granted, we’ve had holes to fill in other areas but DL is a pillar of your team.

Our mismanagement at DL is giving our mismanagement at RB last year a run for its money.

No actually it worse then the RB situation because u can play a freshman RB no problem but prepare thy **** if you expect to be a good defense with freshman DT especially if they're 3 stars. They better be Dexter Lawrence if you except anything from them. Not to mention, our S&C program is questionable at best.

A surprise with Fat Felder at the wheel?
