Defense Tonight

From the Herald:

Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson not getting creative enough until the second half. He had several excellent calls after halftime, including the shovel pass to Malachi Toney for a 22-yard touchdown that pulled Miami to within 24-21. But Dawson’s play-calling in the first half was uninspired, drawing the ire of ESPN analyst and legendary coach Nick Saban.

“Miami needs more diversity; spread the ball around more,” Saban implored Dawson at halftime. “On third-and-1, take a shot. You’ve got to do what they think you’re not going to do. Don’t be so conservative. Throw caution to the wind in a game like this.”

I mean... nobody calls a perfect game. Some of Hetherman's calls in the game were bad and predictable too. (I can go down the line) Saban critiqued him as well.

We still outscored them and had more output (on offense)...versus the #1 defense in the country. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think this is a very hard balance for Dawson this season with limited QB who he has to protect and a HC who wants to pound rock and then a defense geared to take away..

I agree with Nick here 100%.. Tough needle to thread tho.. Wish we went more tempo first half

Damari Brown = LOL

Very good when he's on the field .... which is basically never.
Hear me out we pay him a 1/3 of his deal to ride the bench for 12 games.. He can earn the rest by playing in the playoffs and causing ints... ( He played in 3 games this year)

Because we had 3 or 4 3-and-outs in the first half, one of which was 3 straight passes. Did Mali even have a touch in the first half? He was way underutilized. Had a week and a half to scheme him open from the start and couldn't do it.
He had 10 catches for 122 yards, brother. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Not sure what more you wanted to see.
It's always easy to place blame on paycalling, especially using hindsight. Kids need to execute. If Beck doesn't throw into double coverage, and he hits Malachi on the crosser, or Bauman on the seam, we're not even having this conversation.

That's the QB, not the playcalling.

What was your issue?
I thought he showed creativity and flexibility in the 2nd half of a game where we were getting dominated.
I think Dawson is predictable and is not creative. Multiple 3 and outs. Zero first half points...again. I think he's slow to adjust.

I think if you flipped the coaching staffs last night, Miami wins by a couple touchdowns

Just wish we had put another Corner or a big DB on Becker, especially after the first back shoulder on 4 down

They were 58% on 3rd down coming in. Literally the highest in history and they went 6 for 16 tonight. Defense played their *** off down their best CB for half. Brown out and I think OJ went out again in the 2nd half. If you told me before the game we held their offense to 20 I would have told you we would be celebrating #6. Instead our special teams ****ed us.

nail on the head.

Tell any UM fan before the game our offense will score 21 pts and their offense will score 20 pts.

Hooray! We won the championship!

Then say “but we lost.” What would they think?

1 of 2 things would immediately come to mind -

1. Beck went back to being the QB he was against Louisville and throwing into double coverage. He threw a pick 6.
2. UM f#cked up on special teams. Maybe gave up KR/PR TD (we hadn’t had a blocked punt all season so it wasn’t on the bingo card)

This, it's the first time I feel like the moment got to him
I think we should have played more press coverage but we were down a couple guys at CB in the 1st half. We did get caught in that nascar package a few times but credit to Indiana for scheming against it. Sometimes you just gotta tip your cap to the other guy. But overall we only gave up 20. Defense gave us a chance to win that game. We aren't having this convo if Beck doesnt throw that pick and we go down and score the game winning TD.

By no means blaming him but I feel like this was his worst coaching job. I'm not hung up on press as much as others are. It's the space we gave the receivers in general. I think Heatherman was trying to make it half to get Lucas back since we were short handed. Which I'm not mad at. Most importantly to clarify and reiterate not blaming Heatherman as he is the main reason we were in the playoffs and nearly won the whole thing. I feel like we coached tight and Indiana didn't. It showed in the final score but we will be back

Idk man I’m not an Xs and Os guy but when your offense is as stagnant as it was the entire first half you’ve gotta try and get your best playmaker the ball in space and get something going. I mean Beck had tons of time to throw. There were multiple times in the first half especially when there wasn’t a single route past 10 yards against 7 guys dropped in zone you gotta have some route concepts to open it up a little when your QBs got all day to throw. Like I said though, not an Xs and Os guy
