Defense and playing the best players

I love what Diaz is doing with the defense so far. Yesterday it was brought up that JY is playing some WILL. That is awesome. Why not? Put a fast run stopper at the WILL and it enables a more lengthy Grace to try his hand at SAM.
Our DB's will be much improved with an actual pass rush and the ability to stop the run consistently. Like one of the kids said yesterday, they will focus on getting to the ball fast and tackling. Awful last year as these kids tried to remember the **** idiot savant defense!

This is coming from a Canadian Football guy (3 downs) but generally speaking you should be putting that run stopper at Will and the more db/lb hybrid at Sam. The Sam would be the first to expand plus he's got the speed to cover the wide side of the field with a 3 tech protecting him in the run.
The will meanwhile is head up ( at depth of course) on a guard with a 1tech, so he's gotta be more physical. Your mike is the one who's the brains and have to be able to do everything.

Exactly! There are several things that can and will happen with a mistake or getting blocked anywhere in a read and react defense that goldofrito ran. It gives guards time to chip then attack the LB,creating a canally. Secondly, if the back breaks the line, the Backers are so far back that the RB has room to accelerate or shake the LB. We are all too familiar with this happening all to often.

An attacking 4-3, getting across the line disrupts the blocking scheme and angles. The guard now has to get the attacker under control before attempting to get to the backer and a speedy SAM can cut off the cut back or get to the outside to turn it back or prevent the back from getting around the corner.
