Dawson allowing the position coaches choose the rotation. Is that a good thing?

So I was listening to DMoney and Pete on CanesInsight live, and they mentioned that Dawson allows his position coaches to dictate the player rotations. Now, if I misheard or misunderstood that, my apologies to DMoney and Pete. I’m not trying to twist anyone’s words.

But it did make me stop and think… if that’s really how things are being handled, is that actually a good thing? Because if Dawson’s calling plays straight off his sheet while the position coaches are deciding who’s on the field, doesn’t that create a bit of a disconnect?

So does that mean he is not considering the skill set of the players when calling plays? Are we not calling plays around our personnel?

This is how things are handled at almost every level on every team. Obviously Dawson and the position coaches are in tune with each other, but the position coaches decide how the reps are managed during the course of a game, for the most part. It’s entirely too much for an OC to call plays and tell Jordan Lyle and Alex Bauman and Josh Moore when to come into and out of games.

There are special circumstances, like the two-point play with Toney, for example. His mom actually told some friends before the ND game they have a few plays where he throws the ball. When Dawson calls those, we obviously coordinate him being in that spot. But on a down to down basis within drives, it’s managed by the position coaches. Happens everywhere, this isn’t news or a story.

Dawson will let the position coaches know when he needs the starters in the game, outside of that the position coaches dictate it

Isn't this why the coaches always talk about "trust"? Dawson has to trust that whoever the position coaches put on the field will be able to handle their job in whatever plays he calls. Obviously there are exceptions when plays are run for specific players
