I am a native Miamian, (1953). I left for Alaska 20 years ago, but now have lived in Charlotte for the last 5 years. I grew up eating at this Shorty"s, enjoying the fabulous Corn on the cob, Spare Ribs, baked beans and cole slaw. I never missed their BOGO coupons in Neighbors. I went to Gables with a member of the Shorty's family, Dallas Clewis. I knew a waitress worked there for 50 years.

It's sad to lose this restaurant landmark, but surprised it stayed so long . It was a must visit every time I visited Miami.

First the Orange Bowl…and now Shorty’s. Another big piece of my upbringing is gone. Sad.

it sucks to start off with. they will reopen at the retail level of the condo that is being built there

not in this instance. why shouldn't they sell and make many millions? why should they be forced to keep it open in order to keep "an institution"? same ****e was said when Norman Bros was sold. people were angry. The family that owned Norman Bros rarely spent the holidays together because they needed to stay open.

I can see where you might get that. The big picture is that I hate that the character of South Florida that I grew up with is being wiped out. There is little appreciation for history here. Once the land value reaches a certain point, the places that made people love the area can't resist the big check. That's not on them, it's exactly what they worked for.

NORMAN BROS IS GONE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I haven't lived in Miami in 20 years but my day is now ruined. :cry:
 
this is a quote from the owners of Norman Brothers. they were tired and the next generation had other professions (rightfully, since that business is slavery).

“In all these years, none of us has had a Christmas Eve at home or a Saturday morning with family – we’re always here,” Suggs says. “It’s a lot of work, and there isn’t a second generation coming in behind us. As we’re getting older, it’s the right time to plan for what’s ahead.”

I wasn't a huge fan of Shorty's either. There was a place up in PBC I used to like better, Mississippi Sweets. Haven't been there in years, so not sure if it's still around. Think it was in Lake Worth.
 
I'm still saddened that the Mister Donuts that I used to have breakfast at with my grandfather and sister in Deerfield Beach (Hillsboro Blvd) is now gone.

The weird thing is in Margate. When I grew up, there was an old drive in movie theater and hotel on 441 off of Margate Blvd. After it closed, it was then used for swap meets.

Later, the hotel was demolished, and the old drive-in screens were completely torn down. That was by the late 1990s.

Twenty five years later that land still sits cleared. Still sits vacant.
