Favour Arie:
#19 C
#5 player in Maryland #1 C
6’11 215
Future: 5

Favour Arie plays out of Bishop Mcnamara Highschool (BMH) in Maryland. He is the first team all WCAC. The team finished 12-2 losing to Paul VI in the finals. Mcnamara plays an aggressive defensive front that favours Arie’s play style. With guards that excel at perimeter defense, it highlights Arie’s strengths. The guards for BMH are young most of them juniors but are great playmakers and defenders. Arie lead the team in Pts/game rbs/game and fg%. His second-best player on his team is 2023 guard Jeremiah Quigley who leads the team in assists. I wish that Bishop McNamara would play in more national tournaments just so we could see Arie perform against the best players in the country. For this breakdown, I will be using the full game of Dematha vs BMH. This game was the semifinal for the WCAC playoffs. Arie finished the game with a game-high 19 points, although he fouls out late in the fourth. I will also be using the highlights from this game as well as vs Gonzaga and Paul VI. Against Gonzaga, he hit the game-winner and scored 14 points. Against Paul VI in the championship game, they lose on the last play but he finished with 10p 10r 1a and 5blks. I used more of the full game but definitely take the time to watch the highlights he makes some impressive plays throughout.

Size:

Favour is huge. He stands at 6’11 and a 7’4 wingspan. He is strong but still has room to add to his frame. Personally, I wouldn't want him to add too much weight but having him get to the 230-245lbs would be ideal. That is because his lightweight is an important part of his game. But he definitely needs to add some lower body strength to deal with college bigs. He really does a good job using his size to contest shots and disrupt passing lanes. He uses his length a lot to create leverage when fighting for position.

  • 45:45-46:00: Favour uses his strength and leverage to absolutely abuse his defender. Eventually sealing him off and opening up a lane for his guard.

Athleticism:

Favour is very athletic. He uses his long strides to cover ground quickly and can jump with the best of them. He has great footwork for a big and decent lateral quickness. This is nothing to write home about and won’t be an A+ perimeter player, but in the hedging scheme we like to play his ability to make up ground will help immensely. Needs to build strength, especially lower body strength and balance.

  • 49:35- 49:45: Uses his strength to bully the smaller defender, who does a good job of fronting him. Favour’s length allows the guard to throw the entry pass, which favour then dunks.

  • 59:00-59:10: Off the steal, he starts running the guard gives it to him. Goes for the dunk but gets hacked. Just look at his strides.

Finishing:

Arie is a strong finisher who will only get better with added size and strength. His hands are suspect as there are times when he fumbles entry passes and lobs, definitely something to keep an eye on as it’s not something that can be easily fixed. Shows a wide array of post moves but his favourite is definitely a drop step into a post hook or an up and under as a reversal. Would like to see him go to his left more, with most of his moves going right. He is good at establishing position on the block and constantly looks for opportunities to seal a smaller defender. Finishes with power and finesse but I would like to see him finish over and through opponents more and use his elite size and athleticism. Does get locked into the post up to much, where instead of kicking it out he will force it. Below I show a lot of what he needs to work on, but he finishes at a high level. I just wanted to highlight some things he can improve on.

  • 32:50-32:55: Nicely drawn up play by the coach to get an easy entry pass for Favour. He receives the pass and then drops steps into and up and under the finish. Would like to see him not drop set into the help, the help defender was lazy, at the next level that’s a risky situation.

  • 39:30-39:40: Dematha adjusts and sends backside doubles at Arie, Arie does a good job of not rushing. Although instead of dribbling it out for a guard handoff or passing it out he forces a contested fadeaway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
- 39:50-39:52: He bobbles the dump-off pass, might not have expected it, but as a big when a guard drives you to have to be ready for the dish.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 52:25-52:30: Again with the drop-step, but instead goes for the hook shot. Can see the need for lower body strength as he gets knocked off of his base. Makes up for it by using his length.

Shooting:

Not a threat to shoot constantly yet but shows great potential. I didn’t count them but he seems to make his free throws at a good rate, which is a good way to determine if someone has the potential to shoot. He has a nice jump shot from around 10-15ft from the basket. Don’t expect it but I think he can become a respectable three-point shooter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork

  • 59:30-1:00:11: Shows his great free throw from nails both clutch free throws to tie it up, even with Dematha trying some gamesmanship.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf8N4FbeWh8&ab_channel=CapitolHoops

  • 1:40-1:45: Shows his potential as a shooter off the dribble. He attacks the defense and then shoots a sidestep jump shot. Don't think this will be his game but it’s nice to know he has the ability to shoot off the dribble at the high school level.

Dribbling and Passing:

Doesn’t put the ball on the ground often, but when he does it looks awkward. Definitely a post/rim running type of playmaker. In terms of passing, he doesn't make the hard passes, but he makes the easy pass. Would like to see him calm down in the post more and use his height and length to pass over smaller defenders. Needs to also work on making reads quicker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 43:20-43:25: Seals his defender, goes for his drop step, sees the help defender, and instead of forcing it, he makes the easy pass to the open player in the corner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tuwNXIb-7c&t=233s&ab_channel=CapitolHoops
  • 5:38-5:44: Passes it out of the post to his open teammate for the make. Quick, easy, simple.

Defense:
He is an A- rim defender the biggest thing stopping him from becoming an elite rim defender is learning that not everything needs to be a block. This is one of the biggest reasons he gets into foul trouble, missing timing blocks going for the highlight block gets him in trouble at times. He shows an ability to defend on the perimeter and is a great help defender. Does need to work on going vertical, not fouling on closeouts, and his need to hand check on defense. As well as not picking up bad fouls early in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
-10:20-10:25: Uses his size combined with solid footwork to cut off the drive then recover to contest and block the rim attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 47:10-47:20: Uses his feet, recovery speed, and length to stay in front of the guard. Bites on the up-fake and fouls the guard. The clip shows that he has the ability to stay in front of a guard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 53:20-53:35: Just a great defensive possession, he doubles the post player then closes out on the pass out without fouling, then recovers for his teammate's poor closeout and cuts the baseline off. They call foul but I don’t think that was one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 1:05:55- 1:06:10: monster block, might’ve been goaltending. Shows he’s shot-blocking ability.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-jSfwhZV6g&ab_channel=DyeSportingNetwork
  • 1:07:07- 1:07:15: He is left on an island against an excellent D1 perimeter player, the guard should’ve stepped up and switch but didn't Favour starts off good but bites on a hesitation towards his back foot and gets blown by. He recovers from the miss and blocks the second-chance shot.

Attitude and work ethic:

Arie is a bully and a very physical player. He searches for contact a lot which is something I like in bigs. I can’t speak for his work ethic off the court but it seems to be high as his team finished first in their division, and went to the finals with him being the lynchpin on both offense and defense. He constantly competes for boards (does need to focus a bit on boxing out instead of trying to out jump). I personally would like to see him run at a full sprint on break opportunities more often. I see him on the ground a lot which can be scary for a big guy but I admire his willingness to hit the deck to fight for lose balls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5b0rry5znc&ab_channel=CapitolHoops
  • 5:30-5:37: misses his shot, but fights through two defenders to get the rebound, he misses the putback but works to get the ball back resulting in him getting fouled.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tuwNXIb-7c&t=233s&ab_channel=CapitolHoops
  • 5:04-5:14: He works on the offensive boards to give his team another opportunity, then fights off two defenders to grab the board again. He makes a quick step-through and finishes with his left.

All in all:

Favour is my favourite recruit in our class. He is everything we could ask for in a big man. He is not scared to get physical and takes pride in his anchor role on defense. He works hard to compete for rebounds and loose balls. He is still skinny and needs to add more muscle and general weight. He shows potential as an above-the-rim finisher on lobs but due to his team's playstyle, he doesn’t get a lot of those opportunities. He definitely has the ability to play significant minutes as a freshman, although I don’t expect him to play significant minutes or start right away. But he should be able to compete for minutes as the frontcourt minutes behind Norchad are wide open. With his size and unique skill set on defense, he fits the criteria as a small-ball big with his ability to defend the rim, hold his own on the perimeter and punish small defenders in the post. He definitely will be a four-year player, due to the lower stock in big men in the NBA, but if he develops as I expect him to I can see him in the NBA as a draft pick.
A good Cane comparison for him is Ibuka Izundu, he has tons of potential, can score in the post, and like to block shots. But he most likely will get bullied by ACC bigs on defense as well as his penchant to get into early foul trouble often. He is in no way anything close to Deng Gak, he is already much more refined and has better laterally quickness, he just needs to stay healthy and he will become at the minimum a full-time starting big in the ACC. All in all, this kid is special and if they played more nationally televised games he would’ve been rated higher.

This one took longer than I expected with myself getting caught up in work at my job and becoming obsessed with reading Berserk. Also, youtube has been taking down some of the games I was planning on using so I had to redo this all over again. Anyways I hope Y’all like it and let me know what you think about Favour Arie.

He shows an ability to defend on the perimeter and is a great help defender. Does need to work on going vertical, not fouling on closeouts, and his need to hand check on defense. As well as not picking up bad fouls early in the game.

-10:20-10:25: Uses his size combined with solid footwork to cut off the drive then recover to contest and block the rim attack.

  • 47:10-47:20: Uses his feet, recovery speed, and length to stay in front of the guard. Bites on the up-fake and fouls the guard. The clip shows that he has the ability to stay in front of a guard.

  • 53:20-53:35: Just a great defensive possession, he doubles the post player then closes out on the pass out without fouling, then recovers for his teammate's poor closeout and cuts the baseline off. They call foul but I don’t think that was one.

  • 1:05:55- 1:06:10: monster block, might’ve been goaltending. Shows he’s shot-blocking ability.

  • 5:30-5:37: misses his shot, but fights through two defenders to get the rebound, he misses the putback but works to get the ball back resulting in him getting fouled.

This kid doing it against some serious competition, arguably best prep league in the country.

Thanks for the awesome breakdown, Reston...I feel like I should pay you for your work
..lol!

This + 100% the fact that he lead his team as both a junior and senior to success shows a lot about his character.

Thanks missed that
Understandable. You got the important stuff (about his game) right. As for his Free Throw shooting, glad to hear he's prettty good at the line. As you say, a good indicator of shooting potential. Also, at his size, he's likely gonna get fouled a lot. We don't need a Ben Simmons in that regard at crunch time.

Due to his name, I was wondering if Favour was of Haitian extraction. Looks like, after research, not the case. Apparently, Nigerian.

How does he compare to Gak coming out? They have similar measurables and rankings.
IMO I think Favour is closer to a finished product than Gak was. Not as athletic vertically, but Favour is better laterally. Also, hard to compare because Gak has been injury-prone for his whole career.
