I've been on the fire Golden train for quite some time now. However, I've seen a couple of posters try to claim that the program is better now than when it was under Shannon's watch. Since we've been the poster child of mediocrity and underachievement for the past decade, I wanted to throw Coker in this analysis, as well, to truly see if we are truly in better shape, now, than past 5 years prior to Golden.
Jamie Dukes made mentioned today on my local sports station, that when you hire a coach, that coach needs to be good in atleast one area, and what he lacks in, he hires as coordinators and works with them....but you can't just hire nice guys b/c they will always fail.
Key phrase, GOOD in one area.
Godlen was hired with the reputation as a tireless of worker, motivator of young men, with defensive ties.
Looking back at Coker's last couple of years here, our downfall was our QB play. Kyle Wright was a complete bust and Brock Berlin was a UF transfer; but going back to the defense, since that's Al's "specialty", the last three years under Coker, the defense gave up on avg only 284.3 ypg and an avg. of 15.6 ppg (which would be an avg rank of 10th in the nation)
Shannon took over in 2007. We know the overall record, so we all thought that Shannon was the worst coach in UM's history. Shannon, too, was known for his defensive prowess. In his four years here, the defense gave up an avg. of 329 ypg and 23.3 ppg (which would've ranked 43rd in the nation.) During Shannon's tenure, he beat #20 Texas A&M, #18 FSU, #14 GT, and #8 Oklahoma.
Now the Golden era...Golden's scheme has yielded the following results:
Looking back only on his first four full years, on avg. we gave up 400 yrds ppg, and 25.42 ppg (which would've ranked 51st in the nation)
Golden's signature victory has come against #7 UF which finished the season 4-8.
Here's the most alarming stats:
-Shannon's worst year, statistically, on defense was his first year...Golden's best year, statisically, on defense was his first year. The numbers dropped after Shannon's first year, the numbers have inflated after Golden's first year.
-In the last 30 yrs, Golden was the first to coach where the defense allowed more yards ppg than what our offense put up. This coming on the heels of his "best" season when we went 9-4 in 2013.
-Currently, we are avg. 344 ypg, and 21.8 ppg...however, if you take away the BCC game in which we gave up a total of 75 yards and 0 points which has help out our numbers greatly, this current Canes defense over the last 3 games are avg. 432.3 yards ppg and giving up 29 ppg which is ranked in the bottom third in FBS and has been consistent with the results of Golden's scheme outside of the 2014 season.
-As it stands, going into year 5, our defense has been bleeding approx. 404 ypg, and 26 ppg; and to be honest, b/c we schedule FCS schools and a sub division FBS school every year, the true numbers are actually a lot worst.
This is not another "bash Golden thread"; this is to highlight that anyone on this site whether a visitor, an Admin, a frequent poster who think that this program is and has been in better shape under the watch of Golden vs. Shannon or Coker previously is completely delusional and in denial. Never has this program been in worst shape over the last 5 yrs vs. what Butch had inherited some 20 yrs ago (let that breathe a little bit)
