Well, my brother and I just endured our walk of shame from the stadium to our hotel. Tough night. I'm not sure if it was any better in person but here are the observations live.
1. Our offense was pathetic. Painful to watch. Watched our offense run right into a 9-man front all night. We got little to no push and got nothing going. They knifed through us consistently.
2. Too many mental mistakes. That's on the staff. Penalties. Not aligning. Special team errors. The list goes on and on. It's a Chinese fire drill.
3. To the first and second point, our play calling was even worse. No creativity. It definitely felt like they were protecting Brad and the offense. Our second half "adjustments" continue to astound me.
4. Our defense seemed improved at first, but wore down bad late. I liked our safety play early and I though Armbriter had a good game. We had some chances to make plays in the backfield (Jenkins missed big time comes to mind) and didn't. We still don't pressure. I guess if you go from dog **** to just **** it's an improvement.
5. Special teams were not special. The kick off return changed the game and took all our momentum away. It was palpable.
6. Our red zone offense made me want to vomit. Pathetic.
7. He's just a freshman, but if Brad was nervous it didn't show that bad. His first pick needed to go up the field more and his second pick shouldn't have been thrown at all. He seemed to move well in the pocket watching him in the game, but it's hard to do anything when no one is helping you in the coaching box. I think he'll be fine.
8. The right side of our line got smoked. Not what you want from two guys how have been in the system.
9. Dorito's alignments are worse in real life when you look at them from an end zone view (we were on the last row to the end zone). Completely outnumbered and out leveraged on many formations. Thank God for drops or they might have put us away early.
10. Our punter looked fine.
11. We still lack defensive play makers and it shows. A lot of UL fans were talking about how much we have fallen off in talent. They were all legitimately 100% they were going to wax our ***. I don't believe that though. I just don't think they are put in good position.
12. This coaching staff just leaves me shaking my head. I didn't see an un-athletic or un-talented group out there. It just never felt like we were put in a good position to win.
I enjoyed meeting some Canes fans, especially some of the player's parents. Brad's mother and Tracy Howard's mother were awesome. I'm going to try not to commit a crime. See you at the Belk Bowl.
