You might not know much about the Central Michigan Chippewas. However, Hurricanes fans need to know one thing: they’re going to run the dam* ball — a lot.
In three games, the Chippewas offense has ran the ball 133 times, compared to Miami’s 110. Interestingly enough, the starting quarterback for the team—Angel Flores, currently leads them in rushing, recording 312 yards on the ground across 60 carries. He also ran the ball into the end zone three times.
Starting running back Jayden Clerveaux was a transfer from Holy Cross, where he recorded 1,700+ yards on the ground. So far this season with the Chippewas, he has recorded 124 yards across 19 carries, while backup tailback Vaughn Blue has logged in 107 rushing yards on 24 attempts and one score.
They currently sit at 2-1 after defeating Colgate and Wyoming, with their lone loss coming against the New Mexico Lobos. Flores has led the team in rushing in all three games, most notably going for 163 yards against Wyoming.
Well Trinton, why do they run it so much? Let me tell you: Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall came over from Army, where he served as the offensive line coach. For those who don't know, Army runs a rushing-first option offense and has been doing so since 2009. So, after taking over the head coaching job, he incorporated Army's offensive scheme into Central Michigan's.
Based on those numbers, let's get straight to the point: These guys will not pass the ball very often, as the Chippewas only have 26 passing attempts on the season. Vaughn Blue also leads the team in receiving yards (28).
The last time Mario Cristobal faced off against a MAC foe was against Ball State in 2024. The Hurricanes limited the Cardinals rushing attack to only six yards on the ground. The most rushing yards Cristobal has given up since becoming the head coach at Miami came against Georgia Tech in 2023 (271 yards).
So far, Corey Hetherman has the defense flying around like usual, allowing only 45.67 rushing yards per game. The defense ranks third nationally for the fewest rushing yards allowed per game. The Hurricanes shouldn’t have no problem stopping the Chippewas rushing attack. The Hurricanes front-seven should be able to dominate all game and be able to stuff the run and make Central Michigan throw the ball.
