Can the NCAA survive this California bill?

Is it better for the NCAA / University OR ....a Player to profit from the use if his own image

  • ONLY the NCAA and the University ..keep it as it is

  • ONLY The Player...it is his image so he should be able to profit from it

  • They should split the proceeds from the use of a players image

  • It should be held in a Trust for the Player....until the player is no longer on scholarship

it doesn't take effect until 2023 so, regardless of what newsom does, it'll be stuck in the courts for a long time.
 
- NCAA "owns" nothing
-- Member schools are "independent franchises" who have signed agreements to be apart NCAA
-- Ditto bowl games
- NCAA rules CAN NOT run counter to local, state, federal law
-- local, state, federal laws could instantly invalidate portions of NCAA agreements with member schools
--- NCAA could fight in state/federal courts...and will lose badly
-- Several other states following CA (about only smart thing CA legislature has ever done)
- IF this becomes law, will essentially create CFB super league like Euro pro futbol..err..soccer
-- Will fundamentally restructure CFB like no one has seen...not incremental change--broken glass massive change
-- Miami 99% likely WILL NOT be in said league if ever, or for long term if it tries
-- IF PAC 12 could ever execute its strategy, NO ONE will have head start like they can have (Asian market money worth BILLIONS)

PS...Newsom (huge douche) technically doesnt have to sign it...just not send back to legislature via veto....if he takes no action, automatically becomes law after a period of time
 
Teams are members of a conference who are members of the NCAA.

Cali athletic department, or any team for that matter, are more than welcomed to pay their athletes but what organization/league are they gonna play for? I'd imagine the loss of TV sponsorships, bowl money, etc. to the school are far too great to risk.

Moreso, the NCAA being an independent billion dollar machine, will not budge.

LOL...almost none of this is accurate.
 
Something is going to come down the pipe financially for the players because the numbers are getting too astronomical. That said, whatever that is will benefit the 5, maybe 10 already elite programs, because outside of them, no ones likeness is really marketable enough to make the numbers work.

You think California will be the only one? There has been talk about paying the players for years, this is only the first step in making that a reality. NCAA true to fight this and it will be the end of them. They better jump ahead of this if they want to survive and offer something for their "student athletes".
 
All this is going to do is make the SEC players get paid 2x as much now....all while destroying CFB completely. Not saying it isn't bad now, but this would actually make it worse. Players can play in arena football leagues or something if they want to get paid to play.
 
Essentially this would make Johnny Manziel legally able to get money from his autographs. I am all for it.

Great for Miami, USC and Notre Dame. Terrible for the SEC and its Foundations . Exacerbates the Foundations' costs. Imagine players choosing bewtwen SoCal or South Beach and KKK Country
 
IMO i think that the NCAA needs to get out in front of this because it may be its undoing if they do not.......this is not going away about players getting paid........the NCAA ignoring it will get destroyed in the courts........
 
The NCAA knows this will end their power over collegiate sports. They control EVERYTHING right now for a reason, to control the narrative. If these kids get paid and are able to make money off of their name the power shifts from the NCAA to the players and they don’t want that. I believe one of the ncaa members was quoted “ you can’t have the animals run the zoo”.

The NCAA can tell California schools that to remain part of the NCAA it can not pay its players. It’s not like this is news. This is one of the requirements. The NCAA goes to great lengths to punish players for accepting a jelly donut. Other states have to start passing similar laws where they can exert some kind of pressure on the NCAA to change its stance or have enough schools willing to leave and form a new NCAA.
